Pompeo says progress made with North Korea amid denuclearisation talks

US North Korea To Form Working Groups On Denuclearization

Pompeo, who was carrying out the first meeting between the us and North Korea since Mr. Trump met with Kim Jong Un in Singapore last month, would not reveal any details on the progress he said was made.

Kim Yong Chol later said that "there are things that I have to clarify" to which Mr Pompeo responded that "there are things that I have to clarify as well".

North Korea apparently didn't get the memo.

On Saturday, Pompeo said he spent "a good deal of time" in the latest talks discussing a denuclearisation timeline and the declaration of the North's nuclear and missile facilities.

Pompeo, however, did not meet with Kim Jong Un or walk away with any significant developments on moving closer to the denuclearization of North Korea.

Pompeo said he had also pushed North Korea on a promise to destroy a missile engine test site and that the United States would like that to happen "soon".

North Korea is planning to hold a summit with the US or multilateral negotiations with the US, South Korea and China through the remaining months of this year and next year, Kyodo said, adding that Geneva was a likely candidate to host the bilateral summit.

Many experts doubt Kim's sincerity - a nuclear deterrent to the U.S. military forces massed in South Korea has always been a strategic goal of his isolated, autocratic regime - and few expect this to be a quick process, even if Washington wants results within a year.

Kim Yong Chol said that the two had had "very serious discussion on very important matters yesterday" and joked that as a result, Pompeo "might have not slept well last night" at the prestigious Paekhwawon, or 100 Flowers Garden, guest house.

But Ji-won the North Koreans seem to have taken a different view, to say the least, about that meeting.

"We expected that the USA side would bring itself with a constructive proposal", the spokesman said, without elaborating.

Pompeo's visit to North Korea has led to the launch of working groups to deal with details such as verification.

He had met Kim Yong-chol, widely seen as North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's right-hand man. Suggesting that the United States needed to find a special negotiator to meet continuously with the North Koreans, Wit said that it was "a fantasy to think that this can be done overnight" but that it could be done eventually.

In criticizing the talks with Pompeo, however, it carefully avoided attacking Trump personally, saying "we wholly maintain our trust toward President Trump", but stressed that Washington must not allow "headwinds" against the "wills of the leaders".

Pompeo said they made progress on what the modalities would look like for the destruction of that facility.

Today's meeting follows three hours of talks at the Baekhwawon state guest house in Pyongyang on Friday, following the us delegation's arrival in Pyongyang just before noon.

North Korea has called high-level talks with a USA delegation led by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo "extremely regrettable", contradicting Washington's account of how the meeting in Pyongyang went.

Pompeo said that North Korea, in the "many hours of talks" at a walled-off guesthouse outside downtown Pyongyang, reiterated its commitment to denuclearisation.

Daryl Kimball, executive director of the Arms Control Association, said the ability for those more junior officials to work productively is critical.

Trump and Kim Jong-un signed an agreement at a June 12 summit pledging to "work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".

They were expected to talk all day Saturday before Pompeo heads to Tokyo to brief Washington's Japanese and South Korean allies.

"We now have a meeting set up for July 12 - it could move by one day or two - where there will be discussions between the folks responsible for the repatriation of remains".

Speaking in Tokyo, Pompeo said his efforts to push the North on disarmament had the backing of the entire worldwide community.
