Put The Honey Smacks Down, CDC Warns After Salmonella Outbreak

FDA: Retailers cannot legally sell Kellogg's Honey Smacks cereal following recall

Cases have come in from 33 states and roughly one-third of those affected have had to be hospitalized.

"Do not eat this cereal".

One hundred people are confirmed with infections from Salmonella Mbandaka, with 30 having been admitted to hospitals, according to the Centers for Disease and Prevention. Though the official recall notice covers boxes with a date from June 2018 to June 2019, federal health officials now say consumers shouldn't bother checking dates or sizes and just avoid all boxes. The CDC now advises that anyone who has purchased the cereal return it for a refund or throw it out completely regardless of an expiration date. But the cereal is still being sold in some stores.

The CDC has urged consumers not to eat Honey Smacks "in any size packaging" and to throw opened or unopened boxes in the trash even if some of the cereal had been eaten without people falling ill.

The CDC reports that the first known victim became sick on March 3. The company has recalled the cereal, and consumers and retailers are being advised to get rid of it. "No deaths have been reported", the agency reported on its website.

The CDC puts salmonella illnesses at 1.2 million per year in the United States, 1 million of which are caused by food.

Symptoms usually begin within a week after exposure to the bacteria.

People infected with Salmonella may have symptoms including diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps.

Most people recover without treatment, however. However, people in high-risk groups, which include children, older adults, pregnant women and anyone with a compromised immune system can develop serious complications which require hospitalization.
