Russian Federation salutes 'heroes' after Croatia ends World Cup dream

President Vladimir Putin kicks a ball during a World Cup event in Moscow’s Red Square on June 28

Russian Federation coach Stanislav Cherchesov says words of encouragement from President Vladimir Putin are an "extra boost" as the team prepare for Saturday's World Cup quarter-final against Croatia. He told Reuters previous year, "if countries are going to have nukes, we're going to be at the top of the pack". They are still great guys for us, they are heroes.

"You know, I think the fact that we're having a summit at this level, at this time in history, is a deliverable in itself", said Huntsman, adding that he "wouldn't underplay at all the importance of actually sitting down for the first time in a meeting-summit environment and discussing the issues that really matter most".

Cherchesov's contract with the Russian Football Union expires in August and he was unwilling to speculate on his future.

"My guess is that that will be part of the discussion as well, but I don't want to get ahead of the possible summit conversations", Huntsman said. "You are the best fans in the world!" the team wrote on Twitter. "We felt your support from the first second". "We succeeded but we have to keep going forward".

Russia's hopes of a home-country World Cup championship have ended with a loss to Croatia and plenty of tears, but the country's leaders, citizens, and even a prominent opposition activist expressed gratitude to the overachieving soccer squad.

Cherchesov noted, "Talking about criticism, if they trusted us or not, we trusted ourselves".

"Thank you for those honest, genuine emotions that you gave us throughout the World Cup".

President Donald Trump will drill down on Russia's "malign activity" during summits with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies and President Vladimir Putin, US officials said on Thursday, signaling a harder line against Moscow than Trump has traditionally taken. "I believe that people did not only start trusting us but they are in love with us", he told reporters during his post-match press conference.

Asked if the U.S. might recognise Crimea to be part of Russian Federation, he said, "We're to have to see" and then said the situation was handled "unfortunately" by his predecessor, President Barack Obama.

Russia may have supplanted America as the indispensable arbiter in various Mideast conflicts but there's only so far Putin is willing to go to appease Trump when it comes to Iran, according to Andrei Kortunov, head of the Russian International Affairs Council, a research group set up by the Kremlin.
