Samsung’s new India phone factory is ‘world’s largest’

Narendra Modi

In front are open fields with grazing cattle, to the left are under-construction residential societies and to the right is its existing facilty - this where Samsung has set up what is the world's largest mobile factory.

The new Samsung factory will have the capacity to fabricate 120 million smartphones per year, and make everything from low-end smartphones that cost under $100 to the company's flagship S9 model, according to the company.

The Samsung unit was set up in Noida back in 1995 and it was used to initially produce television sets. The 35-acre facility will reduce time to market and give Samsung more elbow room to export to neighboring regions - ultimately giving Samsung a leg up on its competitors. More than 120 local factories now assemble mobile phones and accessories like chargers, batteries, powerbanks and earphones in India, according to tech research firm Counterpoint.

The Indian mobile phone market grew by 48% YoY in the first quarter of 2018, driven by strong demand from the featurephone segment.

It aims to make India an export hub for mobile phones as part of its "Make for the World" initiative.

"I am committed to raise relations with India to the level of those with our four major powers around the Korean peninsula", Moon said, adding that this commitment was embodied in his new southern policy outlined a year ago.

Built in 1996, the Noida factory was one of the first global electronics manufacturing facilities established in India, according to the firm.

Last June, Samsung announced an investment of ₹4,915 crore to add new capacity at the Noida plant. The capacity increase is in line with Samsung's plans to expand production that will help it compete with its Chinese rivals in the Indian market. Clearly there's untapped potential in the market, and coupled with the fact India is now the world's fastest growing market, Samsung spotted an opportunity.

Speaking on the occasion, Korean President Moon Jae In said Korean companies are taking part in the fast-paced growth of India and plant like the Samsung factory will create more jobs for Indian people. India has around 40 crore smartphone users and almost 32 crore people use broadband.

The facility was jointly inaugurated by Modi and Moon Jae-in, President of the Republic of Korea. Apart from Noida, Samsung also has a factory in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai, five research and development centres and one design centre along with 1.5 lakh retail outlets and 3,000 customer service points.
