Scientist, Stephen Hawking is dead

'We still don’t have the technology to verify Stephen Hawking's big ideas'

At the age of 21, he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a debilitating disease affecting his voluntary muscular movement, and was given just two years to live.

Hawking used a speech synthesizer that allowed him to speak in a computerized voice with an American accent.

After Morgan asked the question, he was told in an interview with Motor Neurone Disease Association spokesperson Richard White that he had actually been offered one. "The answer is, not a lot. That made Stephen Hawking a kind of brand name".

"My goal is simple", Hawking was quoted as saying in a 1989 biography.

The discovery of Hawking radiation changed the way researchers understand the universe.

Last, I met him some years ago in a banquet at King's College, Cambridge, at the department of Maths and Theoretical Physics.

Prof Hawking arrived at the university in 1962 as a PhD student, and was eventually given the prestigious title of Lucasian Professor of Mathematics, a position once held by Sir Isaac Newton, in 1979.

Although he is known as a brilliant mind for his theories, Stephen Hawking was not particularly good when it came to grades.

Characteristically, he did not see the trip as a mere birthday present.

Instead, he said he wanted to show that disability was no bar to achievement and to encourage interest in space, where he believed humankind's destiny lay.

"If aliens ever visit us, I think the outcome would be much as when Christopher Columbus first landed in America, which didn't turn out very well for the Native Americans".

More recently he said artificial intelligence (AI) could contribute to the eradication of disease and poverty, while warning of its potential dangers.

As an author, among his most well-known works was "A Brief History of Time".

It was followed in 2001 by "The Universe in a Nutshell".

Matt Selman, Simpsons' executive producer, called Hawking "the most intelligent guest star in the brief history" of the show.

In September 2016, Hawking joined 375 "concerned" scientists in penning an open letter criticizing then-presidential candidate Donald Trump, citing the threat of climate change and blasting his push for the USA to leave the Paris accord.

"(He) taught us the endless possibilities of our own curiosity.

He was rescued by his friend, Jane Wilde, who went on to become his first wife, giving him a family with three children.

The couple married in September 1995 but divorced in 2006.

In 2014, Eddie Redmayne-starrer The Theory of Everything, a biographical drama, was based on Hawking's life.

"It's hard to imagine anyone who has been more successful at not only pursuing an academic research career of enormous significance but [who] also has made such an imprint on the popular understanding of science, and even through popular culture", says former Monitor science writer Pete Spotts.
