Study says diet rich in nuts leads to higher sperm count

Researchers said eating nuts boosted the number and health of sperm in young men in a scientific trial

Study regarding the influence of nuts, goes hand in hand with other works, talking about the positive impact of omega-3, antioxidants and vitamin b fertility.

The findings of the research says that men who are planning to become fathers should regularly consume a diet comprising of 60 gm of assorted nuts such as walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts and cashews.

The results of the study were presented at the annual meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology on 4 July.

The randomised trial by researchers from the Rovira i Virgili University in Spain measured conventional semen parameters and molecular changes over a 14-week study period.

This comes after a study last year that found there was a significant general decline in men's sperm counts - about 1.6% a year - in North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand between 1973 and 2011.

The findings "support a beneficial role for chronic nut consumption in sperm quality" and reflect a research need for further male-specific dietary recommendations, the investigators said. Others followed the diet, in which nuts were included very rarely.

Sperm and blood samples were analysed at baseline and after 14 weeks of intervention.

A trial found that nuts improve sperm count, vitality, swimming ability and shape - all factors that influence fertility. For the analysis, the researchers recorded not only the quality of the sperm but also the changes that occurred in several molecular factors, including sperm DNA fragmentation.

Researchers also looked at sperm DNA fragmentation, closely associated with male infertility, and found that this was also less in the group that ate the nuts.

On being asked if men hoping to conceive a baby should add nuts to their everyday diet, he Salas-Huetos said, "We can't yet say that based exclusively on the results of this study". "We can't yet say that", said Salas-Huetos, "based exclusively on the results of this study".

"But evidence is accumulating in the literature that healthy lifestyle changes such as following a healthy dietary pattern might help conception - and of course, nuts are a key component of a Mediterranean healthy diet", he said.

Sperm counts have halved in the western world over the past four decades, which, alongside rising testicular tumours, could be behind plummeting fertility rates and couples' increasing dependency on IVF, according to Professor Niels Skakkebaek from the University of Copenhagen.
