Super-Mom Serena into 10th Wimbledon final

Goerges

Serena Williams of the US plays a shot during her semi final match against Julia Goerges of Germany.

Angelique Kerber, the 2016 Australian Open and U.S. Open victor, beat 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko 6-3, 6-3 in Thursday's early semifinal.

Serena Williams will make her 10th appearance at the Wimbledon final after beating No.13 seed Julia Goerges of Germany 6-4, 6-2 in the semi-finals.

For Kerber, it was clear right from the opening game how things were going to go against Ostapenko.

It's insane. I don't even know how to feel because I literally didn't think I'd do this well in my fourth tournament back. For a time afterward, she could barely walk to the mailbox. "So I'm taking everything as it is and just enjoying every moment".

She was off the tour for more than a year after her Australian Open title in January 2017 - won while she was pregnant, she later revealed.

Earlier, Kerber neutralized the booming groundstrokes of Ostapenko to reach her second Wimbledon final.

Despite rumors that Williams played beer pong at the reception, the tennis great completely laughed off those claims.

"Ostapenko still goes big even when she is having trouble with so many unforced errors", twice U.S. Open champion Tracy Austin said in summarising for the BBC.

However, this does not come without its problems for Williams, who says opponents always bring their best game against her. "It's just a number and I want to get as many as I can".

"To be perfectly honest, I haven't thought about that this tournament".

Serena Williams will face 11th-seeded Angelique Kerber, on Saturday. "I lost count after, like, four surgeries because I was in so many surgeries", said Williams after her semifinal win on Thursday.

Jul 12, 2018; London, United Kingdom; Serena Williams (USA) in action during her match against Julia Goerges (GER) on day 10 at All England Lawn and Croquet Club.

Tennis fans have been desperate to see the new Duchess of Sussex at Wimbledon - and now she's set to make her royal debut at SW19 on a double date with Kate.

Serena Williams is back, for real.

The second set followed a similar pattern with Goerges showing both courage and promise in the first half and then falling away a little in the next.

She has delivered 44 aces and won 80 percent of first serve points and looks unstoppable. Her mobility is solid, her serve is incredible, and she's been taken to three sets just once all tournament.

Williams' match against Goerges was even until 2-all, 30-all. But unlike in the quarterfinals, when she needed seven match points to win, this time it required only two, with the match ending - fittingly enough - on a forehand by Ostapenko that sailed wide.

The German was unable to turn that break into anything resembling a comeback, however, as Williams quickly earned three match points in the following game and converted when Gorges sent a lob long.

"The first set we played 40 minutes for 6-2". It will be close but I think Serena pulls this off to tie Margaret Court's Grand Slam total at 24. She talked about the power of walking into her matches knowing she has nothing to lose, a point of view she gained by losing nearly everything.

She added: "I was expecting a few more baby steps myself".

In November, Kerber announced she had parted ways with her long-time coach, Torben Beltz, and hired Wim Fissette, the Belgian who used to guide former world No. 1 Kim Clijsters.
