Tesla 'real car company' after hitting Model 3 goal, Musk says

Tesla said that for the first time, Model 3 production in a quarter (28,578) exceeded combined Model S and X production (24,761) with nearly three times as many Model 3s produced in the most recent quarter versus in the first quarter.

GA4, the controversial new assembly line set up in a tent outside Tesla's Fremont, California, factory, was responsible for 20 percent of Model 3s produced in the final week of its second quarter, the company said, adding that quality from that line matched that of its existing Model 3 assembly line.

The technologist wrote: "We did it!"

In May, Tesla sent a new battery assembly line via cargo planes to its Gigafactory battery plant outside Reno, Nevada in order to speed production, as first reported by Reuters. Sure enough, the goal was reached in time, but Elon Musk also confirmed via Twitter that Tesla produced 7,000 cars last week.

Brian Johnson, an analyst with Barclays, warned investors in March to be wary of brief "burst rates" of Model 3 production that were not sustainable. The 7,000 total includes all other cars Tesla now produces. That was "even though we have now delivered 28,386 Model 3 vehicles to date", the company said. "What an incredible job by an awesome team". It had to hire more people to work at the factory.

No standard automotive solution could be built in time, so we created a new solution. Instead, the question has been whether Elon Musk can deliver on his famously ambitious (unrealistic?) promises of mass production.

"I think we just became a real auto company", he wrote in conclusion. The challenge now is maintaining productivity.

And the progress has not been limited to the Model 3. Meanwhile, production of Model S and X vehicles were flat at 24,761, slightly higher than last quarter but below the 28,320 vehicles Tesla manufactured in the fourth quarter of 2017. But it faced multiple delays, including over the use of robotic technology.

The company burned through $1 billion in its push to boost production, and it blamed the slowdown on "excessive automation".

Mr Musk said in an email: "We did it!"

Musk cut 9% of Tesla's workforce in June, the largest job reduction in its 15-year-history. "To be precise, my mistake". In an effort to show sustainability/ improvement, company indicated 6k Model 3s/week expected late next month.

Of course, pumping out Model 3 wasn't the only concern some had.

The company reports it still holds 420,000 Model 3 reservations.

Overall, Q2 2018 production came to 53,339 vehicles.

In a very tangible sense, Tesla views its production line as a laboratory for untested techniques.
