The unemployment rate in Canada rose to 6% in June

Bank of Canada

Statistics Canada said on Friday that 31,800 positions had been created in June, a lot of them part-time, while the unemployment rate rose to 6.0 percent from 5.8 percent as more people sought work. "Over the same period, total hours worked grew by 1.4 per per cent", it said.

Analysts predicted a gain of 24,000 jobs and said the jobless rate would remain unchanged.

Jobs in agriculture dropped 10.8 per cent to 21,400, while the province saw small declines in manufacturing (0.4%) and construction (0.5%).

This is the lowest unemployment rate reported in the region since December, and it's the fourth time in seven months that the city's unemployment rate has been below six per cent.

Year over year, employment increased by 215,000, or 1.2 per cent, with all the growth in full-time work, according to Stats Canada. The Bank of Canada says uncertainty over trade tensions between Canada and the United States is one of the biggest potential threats to the economy.

Also, the speed tomorrow is less than in qualifying, because you have more fuel and you'll be a bit slower so it's going to be OK".

A closer look at the June numbers shows Canada added 9,100 full-time jobs in June and 22,700 part-time positions. The public sector has increased its membership by 11 800 jobs, while the private sector lost 2,000 employees.

Employment increased in Ontario, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.

"The big question for us remains will we get any escalation in the trade war between the USA and China over the weekend and early next week that could blow things apart", said Paul-Andre Pinsonnault, senior fixed income economist at National Bank Financial.

DePratto stressed he didn't see anything in the jobs report to deter Poloz from hiking the rate next week. The worldwide trade deficit was about $1.9 billion in April and $3.9 billion in March. The figure for aircraft imports more than tripled to $937 million due to the purchase of several airliners from the U.S.

The report showed that Canada's trade surplus with the US narrowed to $3.3 billion in May, from $3.7 billion April, as more imports headed north across the border and south-bound exports decreased.
