Theresa May faces Commons showdown with Brexit rebels

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May leaves the BBC after appearing on the 'Andrew Marr Show', in central London Britain

12 noon Prime Minister's Questions - These sessions are getting longer and longer.

Former Education Secretary Justine Greening told the BBC that Parliament is "gridlocked" over Britain's exit from the European Union.

May's climbdown provoked a backlash from Remain-supporting Tories, who accused her of being "frightened" of her backbenchers and threatened their own rebellion when another piece of Brexit legislation is put to the vote Tuesday. Her recent "white paper" outlining plans for a "common rule book" with the European Union over trade in goods has infuriated those who favor a complete break.

She insisted the amendments did not deviate from her Brexit plan formally unveiled last week following months of cabinet infighting. She said it would safeguard vital jobs in the aviation industry and keep Britain's tradition as a nation in the forefront of the aviation industry.

She said: "One minute he's flouting his position as Secretary of State, the next minute he's feathering his nest at the first opportunity".

However, the proposed Chequers deal fails to address the issues of Brexit completely as it takes a stance somewhere midway between a "hard" and a "soft" Brexit allowing for the free movement of goods while limiting the movement of services, thus causing United Kingdom to ultimately be a part of the single market as opposed to a complete free trade area.

On Monday, MPs will vote on a series of amendments to the Customs Bill tabled by members of the European Research Group (ERG), which Mr Rees-Mogg leads, meant to scupper her plans for a "UK-EU free trade area" based on a "common rule book".

Mr Rees-Mogg said ERG members would be meeting ahead of the Commons debate and votes on the Taxation (Cross-border Trade) Bill - or Customs Bill as it is more generally referred to - when the level of support for the amendments would become clearer.

Anna Soubry, a leading Tory Remainer, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "We simply can not go on like this".

"I would not have gone through all the work that I did to ensure that we reached that agreement only to see it changed in some way through these bills", May added. This could pile even more pressure on Mrs May.

"Some people are saying they want to vote in the trade bill to keep us in the customs union". This way, the trade between the member states is carried out freely without much restraints and customs checks, but they can not strike their own deal with other nations outside the EU.

He told Today: "The amendments are to a Bill that is created to prepare for the world after Brexit, to be able to establish new customs regime that will be necessary".

Downing Street rejected calls for a national unity government and a spokesman for Mr Corbyn said Labour would not back such a move. "There comes an inflection point, the Chequers deal was an inflection point, we will have to see what happens".

"I hope that the public's eyes will be opened to what's going on today", Baker complained bitterly.
