Theresa May must fight for her position after 'remarkable' Davis resignation

Boris Johnson and David Davis

The Press Association news agency, the BBC and others said Brexit Secretary David Davis resigned Sunday.

Conservative MP David Davis arrives at Downing Street on July 13, 2016 in London, England.

Other ministers in his department, including Steve Baker and Suella Braverman are said to have agreed a "you go, we go" pact with Mr Davis, suggesting Mrs May could find herself having to replace the entire Brexit department if she.

Jacob Rees-Mogg, the chairman of the European Research Group of Brexiteer backbenchers, was openly touted as the only candidate who could deliver Brexit by one MP, Andrew Bridgen.

At a summit at Chequers in the English countryside on Friday, all 12 cabinet members agreed to a plan that would follow European Union rules on goods to ensure "frictionless" trade and allow European Union courts to have some oversight on certain subjects.

Opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn said that Davis' resignation "at such a crucial time" shows that May "has no authority left and is incapable of delivering Brexit".

The whole cabinet had been summoned to Chequers and spent more than 12 hours thrashing out the proposal for the UK's future relationship with the EU.

In his resignation letter, he blamed the "dilution" of what he said was a firm Chequers agreement, delays to the White Paper, and omissions from the "backstop" customs proposal that would leave the United Kingdom in a "weak negotiating position at best".

He said that felt he had to resign as he had no desire to be a "reluctant conscript" in the selling the PM's deal in negotiations with the EU.

Laura Kuenssberg, the BBC's political editor, tweeted that a former cabinet colleague of Mr Davis had said "it's a personal outburst. he's always struggled to muscle into any of the complicated arguments. he is a puff of smoke who will blow away like a dandelion".

Tory MP Andrew Bridgen told the Press Association: "I can't support the offer which emerged at Chequers - I think it's a breach of the red lines, in fact the offer is so poor that I couldn't support it even if the European Union were paying us for it".

Appearing on the BBC's The Andrew Marr sShow on Sunday, he said: "I'm a realist and one of the things about politics is you mustn't, you shouldn't, make the ideal the enemy of the good".

"Obviously if the Government and the Prime Minister continue to support that very poor offer then I won't have any confidence in the Government or the Prime Minister".

She said the government's Brexit plan was "far from perfect" but marked "grown-up steps". Previous year reports emerged that Davis said he meant to "retire" in 2019 and leave the transitional period of Britain's exit from the European Union to Boris Johnson, something later dismissed as a "lighthearted remark".

Asked if the prime minister could survive.

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson backed the proposals at Chequers, despite claiming that defending the plans was like "polishing a turd" during the meeting.

"The PM's proposals for a Brexit in name only are not acceptable".
