Theresa May's Brexit plan 'UNRAVELLING' warns Jones

EU news- Nigel Farage and Jean Claude Juncker

While being careful not to say Johnson should replace her, Trump said: "I'm just saying I think he would be a great prime minister".

Trump, who prides himself on never apologizing, came close to offering something of an apology for his unvarnished remarks.

However, addressing the press at Chequers, Trump said "didn't criticise" May in the interview, insisting he had a "lot of respect" for her.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Sun said the president had "essentially retracted" his claim that their interview was fake news.

Mrs May is facing a rebellion by Brexit hardliners over the proposals, including the resignation of Mr Johnson and Brexit minister David Davis. That will be up to her to say.

Trump will later Friday take tea with Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle, before spending the weekend in Scotland on a private visit that will likely take in 18 holes at one of the property magnate's golf courses, where more protesters await him.

Trump made his first trip to the U.K.as president after a tense summit with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation leaders in Brussels and only days after fresh ruptures in May's government over Britain's exit from the European Union. He also argued that USA laws on immigration are too weak and said, "We have laws that are so bad I don't even call them laws".

One of Trump's greatest obsessions was dismantling ObamaCare, and the president tweeted about the UK's NHS service as proof of that a universal healthcare system is unworkable.

Donald Trump sat next to Theresa May and said we really have a very good relationship.

The meetings are expected to be unusually tense after Trump trashed May's Brexit plans in a diplomacy-wrecking interview with The Sun newspaper that published late Thursday night.

Late previous year, May herself criticized Trump for retweeting a message by a member of a British far-right group, and the speaker of parliament has said the president would not be welcome to address the chamber. "I'm just saying, I think he'd be a great prime minister".

"I think it betrays an ignorance that is truly alarming in a candidate that has got that far to be President of the United States. She might well do what I suggested that she might want to do but it is not an easy thing".

"We stand by our reporting and the quotes we used - including those where the President was positive about the Prime Minister, in both the paper and in our audio - and we're delighted that the President essentially retracted his original charge against the paper later in the press conference".

"If they do a deal like that, we would be dealing with the European Union instead of dealing with the United Kingdom, so it will probably kill the deal", Trump said.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said Friday on BFM television that Trump "can't tolerate that there is an ensemble called the European Union".

"I think what's happened to Europe is a shame".

In his interview, he also renewed his criticism of London Mayor Sadiq Khan over last year's terror attacks in London, saying he had done "a awful job".
