This is the First Confirmed Picture of a Newborn Planet

The planet known as PDS 70b was discovered by the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in Chile and its planet-finding instrument SPHERE

But scientists are eager to study more young-star systems to confirm these hypotheses and learn more about how planets form.

The photo reveals the PDS 70's sculpted transition disc, an inner gap stipulated by scientists for decades as being the byproduct of disc-planet interactions, Interesting Engineering reports.

"These discs around young stars are the birthplaces of planets, but so far only a handful of observations have detected hints of baby planets in them".

Spectral analysis shows PDS 70b is a giant gas planet, with a mass a few times that of Jupiter and a surface temperature of around 1,830F (1,000C), making it much hotter than any planet in our own solar system. Astronomers from Berlin say that they have captured the first image of a new planet.

European Space Agency's Very Large Telescope (VLT) placed at the Atacama Desert is meant for finding new planets in space and it has a SPHERE instrument said to be a powerful one supervised by astronomers at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Germany. More interesting would be to encounter how planets develop from scrap and that's what scientists from Chile have got for us now.

The attention of astronomers was attracted to a newborn star surrounded by a disk of gas and dust.

The black circle in the centre of the image, to the left of the planet, is a filter to block the light from the star, enabling other features of the system to be seen. This star bud is clearly visible in this image obtained by SPHERE: a luminous point, to the right of the center of the image, where the star is masked by the coronagraph.

This glimpse of the dust-shrouded birth of a planet was only possible because of ESO's Sphere instrument, which studies exoplanets and discs around nearby stars using a technique known as high-contrast imaging.

He says, 'This discovery provides us with an unprecedented opportunity to test theoretical models of planet formation'. It is located roughly three billion kilometres from the central star, roughly equivalent to the distance between Uranus and the Sun. This makes the newfound planet a slow orbiter, taking about 120 Earth years to make a single lap around its star.

"The results of observations gave answers to complex questions regarding the birth of planets and their evolution", commented astronomer andré müller from the Institute of astronomy.
