Tiger Woods closes Quicken Loans National with four-under 66

Tiger Woods struggles to keep successful round together Saturday at the Quicken Loans National tournament. More

"The scores aren't going to be that low".

Molinari continued his birdie run at the 14th to briefly move nine ahead and threaten a sub-60 round, only to end his remarkable scoring run by splashing out of the rough at the next to save par.

Following a 275-yard drive at the par-4 fourth leaving 150 yards to the flagstick, Woods stuck his approach within seven feet and putted into the center of the cup, eliciting cheers that could be heard several holes away. He made three more birdies and ended his round by missing a birdie putt from 8 feet.

The 2001 PGA Championship victor saved par with a downhill knee-knocker from three feet away on No. 18 to close out his par round of 70.

Tiger Woods walks on the eighth hole during the final round of the Quicken Loans National golf tournament, Sunday, July 1, 2018, in Potomac, Md. He finished 11 under for the week and was in fifth place with some players still on the course. That was more bothersome to Ancer than the heat.

He admitted it had been a gamble to then decide to miss the French Open at Le Golf National, venue for September's clash with the U.S., to play in a PGA Tour event instead. "It wasn't an easy decision, I thought until the last minute whether to go to France or to come here, but seems like it was the right choice in the end". The 35-year-old Italian posted a 21-under score of 259 for the week, breaking the tournament scoring record by seven.

"It's an incredible feeling-I still have to realize what's happened", Molinari said.

"I wanted to play against a great field and it looks like we're going to".

Woods began the day six behind the leaders, but after making three birdies and no bogeys on the front side he was just four back at the turn. Evidently I would have had to shoot 24 on the back nine to have a chance. "What Francesco is doing back there is just awesome". "I'm fired up to go over to Carnoustie and see how my game translates over there".

In his media session after a closing 66 at the Quicken Loans National, Woods got to commenting on the upcoming Open Championship (his next start).

"He made his fourth birdie in a row, and I couldn't stop smiling", said Joel Dahmen, who played with Woods for the first time and experienced everything he saw for so many years watching on TV as a kid.

The 28-year-old South Korean star birdied the 14th and 15th holes to jump ahead of Canadian Brooke Henderson and finished with a birdie on 18.

"I don't have a problem with my strength and my endurance", Woods said. Molinari previously won the HSBC Champions in 2010, a World Golf Championships event in Shanghai.

"I don't have a definite answer, but I think the first part of the season probably I wasn't playing quite as well as I am, as I have been in the past month or so". And the putter was as scorching as weather that approached 100 degrees. This time, he had the course to himself with a back nine that was close to perfection, much like his week.

Abraham Ancer couldn't miss Saturday. He missed the putt.

And then he opened the back nine with a pair of birdie chances just inside 10 feet and missed the both.
