USA launches five WTO challenges to retaliatory tariffs

Tusk said Europe, China, the USA and Russian Federation had a "common duty" not to destroy the global order but to improve it by reforming worldwide trade rules.

Trump has criticized the WTO as outdated and has gone outside the body to impose import controls, prompting warnings he was undermining the global system.

He said there was still time to prevent conflict and chaos.

The comments from EU Council president Donald Tusk come as Washington and Beijing stand on the brink of a trade war which many fear could hammer the global economy, while the United States has also picked fights with allies in Europe and Canada.

Foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying followed on July 13 with a logically flawed attempt at refuting that China has committed intellectual property theft, as the United States has claimed in a heavy-hitting report by the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative.

Washington imposed 25% tariffs on 34 billion dollars' worth (£25 billion) of Chinese goods in response to complaints that Beijing steals or pressures companies to hand over technology.

The Canada-U.S. trading relationship has been facing big challenges due to unprecedented, cross-border tensions that have also included stalled NAFTA negotiations and threats of new tariffs on the automotive sector by President Donald Trump. In that year, the USA says its goods trade deficit with China was $375.2 billion.

"In the end, they [Chinese drug enforcement agencies] will be pawns of whatever politics the government of China wants to enact", said Jeffrey Higgins, a former Drug Enforcement Administration supervisory special agent, in an interview with Kaiser Health News.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping had vowed to cooperate with the United States when Trump visited China last November.

Beijing has tried, so far without success, to recruit European support in its dispute with Washington.

European envoys say they have sensed a greater urgency from China since previous year to find like-minded countries willing to stand up against Trump's "America First" policies.

Tusk made the remarks during his opening statement at the EU-China summit on Monday in Beijing, Bloomberg and the Guardian reported.

Exporters say American orders started to fall off as early as April as the war of words between Trump and Beijing intensified.

Tusk called for the EU, Russia, US and China to work together to reform the world order rather than destroy it.

Li has appealed to visiting European leaders including German Chancellor Angela Merkel in May by saying their companies were welcome to invest.

The US move is the latest salvo in a growing trade war started by the imposition of US tariffs on steel and aluminium imports.

Premier Li Keqiang will host European Council President Donald Tusk and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker in Beijing, where the two sides could reinvigorate long-running investment treaty talks with the expected exchange of markets access offers for the first time. The executive said no.
