Vettel wins, Hamilton second despite Raikkonen clash

Vettel beats Hamilton in Silverstone classic

Silverstone: Sebastian Vettel opened a clear lead in the drivers' world championship on Sunday when he wrecked Lewis Hamilton's home-race party and claimed an impressive victory in a thrilling British Grand Prix.

"I will feel it a little bit tonight".

While Raikkonen was handed a 10-second time penalty for the incident, Hamilton immediately set about climbing back through the field as the contact had left him with minimal - if any - damage.

But the headlines belong to Vettel, who suffered a neck injury during practice on Saturday and was forced to wear supportive tape during the race, but came through for his fourth win of the season.

Ferrari F1 team principal Maurizio Arrivabene said the Silverstone British Grand Prix was "good for Formula 1" with both Ferraris and both Mercedes duking it out at the front in the closing stages of the race.

He had brought it down to 2.4s when Marcus Ericsson lost the rear of his auto when he turned into the first corner with DRS still open and flew across the gravel and nose-first into the tyres.

"Just got wheel spin and lost ground to the others and then just got a tap from behind and that was that", Hamilton said.

While Lewis Hamilton backtracked on his criticism of Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen on Monday, the Italian team's chief Maurizio Arrivabene launched a scathing attack on the Mercedes team.

But Wolff's counterpart at Ferrari, Arrivabene, was livid. Hamilton was able to pull out some quick laps, yet Vettel was quick to respond, keeping his rival at an arm's length.

Unable to agree new terms, and faced with mounting losses, ahead of last year's race the BRDC took advantage of a clause which allowed it to terminate the contract early, leaving 2019 as the final race.

However, questions will again be asked about Mercedes' tactics after deciding not to pit to replace the tires. "And in a ideal world, I would have had new tires - but it wasn't that kind of day for me", Hamilton said. Bottas then let Hamilton past to challenge the German.

Daniel Ricciardo came home fifth for Red Bull ahead of Nico Hulkenberg of Renault, Esteban Ocon of Force India, Fernando Alonso of McLaren and Kevin Magnussen of Haas.

"But the vehicle is strong...it's going to be a struggle with the guys ahead".

Pierre Gasly rounded out the points-paying positions for Toro Rosso in P10, but is under investigation after a run-in with Sergio Perez when passing at Luffield. "I guess I wanted to give a boost to England", he said.

"This is the greatest race of the year and the greatest crowd, I am sorry I could not bring it home for you today". I will not give up.
