Wimbledon 2018: Kerber, Serena set to reprise 2016 showdown

Angelique Kerber

"It's insane. I don't even know how to feel, you know, because literally, I didn't expect to do this well in my fourth tournament back", Williams said.

"This was not inevitable for me", Williams said after the match, which took 70 minutes to complete. I think everybody knows this tournament.

'This was not inevitable for me, I had a really hard pregnancy and I had to have multiple surgeries, I nearly didn't make it.

"If there was a Wimbledon royalty, I would like to believe I would be Wimbledon royalty because I've done pretty well here in the past". "I've played tennis for over 30 years, so I'm so used to [being] incredibly fit". Williams won that one for a second consecutive title at the All England Club, before missing the grass-court tournament a year ago while pregnant.

But former world No 1 Kerber has denied Williams a top-level title before: the first of her two Grand Slam triumphs came when she beat the legendary American in the Australian Open final back in 2016. But it was Kerber who played the smarter game, keeping her cool, counter-punching whenever possible, and refusing to be rattled by the screaming winners that her opponent hit time and again.

Serena got the 13th seed on the move. "It would be really special to win", said the two-time Grand Slam champion.

France midfielder Paul Pogba ready to make sacrifices for the team's cause
They lost the 2016 Euro final 1-0 to Portugal at Stade de France with a roster that included nine holdovers on this year's team. The wall jumped but Trippier's shot had enough height and pace to careen into the Croatian net and England were in ecstasy.

She opened with a double fault and won the next point with a bludgeoning forehand of breathtaking audacity, a pattern that left the audience gasping at her free-flowing brilliance and then gasping again at her appalling blunders right through the game.

Serena Williams of the US celebrates winning her semi final match against Germany's Julia Goerges.

Kerber had to fend off another break point in her next service game, but eventually got the job done to book her fourth career grand slam final.

Williams has barely played in the last 18 months having taken a year off to start a family.

Goerges, who hit 20 winners and managed a break against Williams in the second set, said she was honored Williams brought her A-Game to Centre Court.

But the seven-time Wimbledon is not merely planning on matching the Aussie's 24-Slam haul and insists she won't "limit" herself by setting a finite target. It was the shortest illusion ever for Julia Goerges who four points later sent a lob long.
