Wimbledon 2018 -- No. 1 Simona Halep loses in third round at Wimbledon

Rafael Nadal Wimbledon

Juan Martin del Potro made the last 16 for the first time in five years when the Argentine fifth seed defeated France's Benot Paire 6-4, 7-6 (4), 6-3.

The 29-year-old will take on Japan's Kei Nishikori who registered his 350th career win with a 6-1, 7-6 (7/3), 6-4 victory over Australian Nick Kyrgios.

Victory for Hsieh means Karolina Pliskova is the only member of the tournament's top-10 seeds still in the draw at the All England Club.

Hsieh will play the 2014 Australian Open runner-up Dominika Cibulkova on July 9 at 6.30 p.m. Taipei time, with the victor moving through to the quarter finals.

Hsieh, the world number 48, battled back from 2-5 down in the final set and saved a match point when the Romanian served for the match at 5-3 in the decider.

Hsieh was previously ranked as world number one in doubles, and previously won the 2013 Wimbledon Championships, the 2014 French Open and 2013 WTA Tour Championships with Peng Shuai (彭帥).

"I was leading the match, I was up, and I couldn't finish it".

When Halep led 4-1 and 5-2 in the final set it looked as though she would live to fight another day but Hsieh broke back and repeated the trick at 5-5 when she landed a sweetly-timed backhand into the corner and Halep could only net.

"I just came out with a very different mindset".

It is the first time Hsieh, 32, has reached the last 16 of the tournament. Nadal is set to clash next again Czech Jiri Vesely - who defeated Italian Fabio Fognini to reach the last-16.

Rafael Nadal has ensured he will keep the world No.1 ranking whatever happens during the second week of Wimbledon by easing past Alex De Minaur and into the fourth round.

"I will not find the excuses about this match, she deserved to win, but still I'm sad about myself today".

But the Serb managed to refocus after a lengthy complaint to umpire Jake Garner.

Asked when she thought she could win the match, Hsieh responded, "I don't feel I can", then leaned forward and laughed heartily.

Djokovic next plays Russian world number 40 Karen Khachanov.

Other early winners on Saturday included Belgium's Alison Van Uytvanck who followed her upset of defending champion Garbine Muguruza by beating Anett Kontaveit, the 28th seeded Estonian, 6-2, 6-3.

Kerber, a two-time Grand Slam champion, who was runner-up to Williams here in 2016, hit 23 winners and made just five unforced errors against her Japanese opponent.
