Wimbledon: Anderson-Isner marathon highlights need for tie-break in final set

Roger Federer

Calls for fifth-set tiebreakers only grew louder after the suspension of Nadal-Djokovic, as the match was pushed back because Isner and Anderson's match went so long as they played out the fifth set.

The previous longest semifinal match at Wimbledon was in 2013, when Djokovic beat Juan Martín del Potro in 4 hours, 44 minutes.

With Merton council imposing at 23:00 BST curfew on play, the players will resume their encounter before the women's final between American 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams and Germany's Angelique Kerber. "Playing like that in those conditions is really tough on both of us", he said. Until the last shot I didn't know if I was going to win.

At stake is a place in Sunday's men's final against Anderson, the man who was partly at fault for keeping Nadal and Djokovic out there so late after South African eighth seed outlasted Isner 7-6 (8-6) 6-7 (5-7) 6-7 (9-11) 6-4 26-24 in the second-longest match in professional tennis history.

"I agree with Kevin. I don't know", Isner said.

"If one person can't finish the other off before 12-all then do a tiebreaker there", the ninth seed said.

"It's long overdue", Isner said.

He was running for election for the Baluchistan Awami Party and is the brother of the former chief minister, Aslam Raisani. Mr Sharif flew into Lahore from London, where he was visiting his ailing wife when he was convicted of corruption.

The match lasted over six and a half hours and was the second-longest match in the tournament's history behind Isner's 11-hour victory over Nicolas Mahut in 2010. "For me, it would have been an interesting match-up and the competitor in me would have fancied my chances!"

The ridiculous length of the Anderson-Isner clash left Nadal and Djokovic waiting until 8pm local time before stepping on court for their box office semi- final.

"For me is always the same: having great players in front push you to improve always your level of work, your level of tennis, and your level of trying to improve all the time". They combined for 102 aces: 53 by Isner, 49 by Anderson.

Just like in his shock five-set quarter-final victory over Roger Federer, Anderson was serving second throughout the fifth set and saw four break points go a-begging before eventually making the breakthrough in the 29th game of the decider against his visibly wilting opponent.

Chasing a 13th career major, but first since completing the non-calendar-year grand slam sweep at the 2016 French Open, Djokovic will carry a 5-1 winning record over Anderson into the championship showdown.

After saving set point Anderson conspired to double fault on his own set point moments later and Isner took advantage to gain command of the contest.

Until Friday, he had not dropped serve until Anderson halted that run at 110 service games in the third set.
