Wimbledon Keeps a Stiff Upper Lip as Football Fever Grips England

Fans celebrate in Bristol as England scored its second goal against Sweden on Saturday

Lewis said he had not asked Federation Internationale de Football Association to consider moving the World Cup final to a different time.

If England defeats Croatia in Wednesday's semifinal, it will feature in a WC final for the first time since lifting the trophy in 1966.

However, Lewis said he would have no objection if numerous 15,000 fans inside Centre Court wanted to follow the football on their devices - as long as they did not disturb the players.

There had been talk of the World Cup final being shown on the big screen on Henman Hill at Wimbledon but that has been ruled out.

The final will be played at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.

Moreover, Lewis said the All England Club would not erect TV screens on the grounds so ticket holders could watch the World Cup, nor will they use the existing oversize screen on Henman Hill behind Court No. 1 for any objective other than tennis.

"It will stay this year, it will stay next year", said All England Club chief executive Richard Lewis. Wimbledon rules state that mobile phones, tablets and other electronic devices "must be switched off in and around the courts in play".

The men's singles final, scheduled to begin at the traditional time of 2pm on Sunday, will not be moved to avoid a clash with the climax of the football tournament, organisers have confirmed.

"Saturday was a fantastic day at the championships".

I was out and about around the grounds and you could tell when England had scored and it was lovely, it was wonderful.

"I´m more concerned the World Cup final will have issues because the Wimbledon final is going on", said the eight-time champion after seeing off France´s Adrian Mannarino in straight sets on Monday. We didn't receive a single complaint from anyone who was here who felt their enjoyment of the tennis was interrupted and I'm sure it'll be the same next Sunday.

But Wimbledon organizers are keeping a stiff upper lip, refusing to show any football on the tournament's big screen, in an attempt to reign in any ungentlemanly behavior.

We had superb tennis going on and we were benefiting from modern technology where people were able to follow the football, enjoy it, without disturbing other people.

"Hopefully England will get through to the final and it will be one of the very special days at Wimbledon". [Football fans] will hear every point, 'Wow, 0-15, 15-30.' The players are going to look up to the...
