Woman accidentally steals auto after mixing up keys

The car that the woman originally rented was a Nissan Sentra sedan

Police are advising drivers who have cars that use fobs to not leave them in the vehicle as this makes them much easier to steal, even if it is accidentally.

In late June, the unnamed woman rented a black Nissan Sentra from a company in Cornwall, Ontario in Canada. "For the next two weeks, the woman drove around and used the black auto for her regular everyday activities", the police said. The owner of the vehicle she drove away in had left his fob in the auto.

In this case, the owner left his keys in the ignition.

Shortly afterwards, Cornwall police received a call from a man who left Walmart only to find his auto, a black Infiniti, missing from the parking lot. Each vehicle was returned to its rightful owner.

Following the comical situation, police warned drivers to not to leave key fobs in their cars, because you never know who might take it.

When Const. Tommy MacKay got the call that a woman had tried to return a stolen vehicle to an Ontario rental auto company, he knew he wasn't dealing with a normal case.

"Once inside, the woman spoke to the manager and commented about how unkempt the inside of the vehicle was and the fact that there was a set of golf clubs in it as well", the Cornall Community Police Service said on its Facebook page. Yes, the cops were involved, but luckily, they chose not to arrest or press charges against the woman.

The stolen vehicle was a black Infinity QX50. When the woman who stole the auto tried to return the vehicle, the manager realized what happened.

This allowed the woman to drive off, completely unaware that it wasn't her rental.

The rental agent had her retrace her steps and they went to the Walmart parking lot where they found the Nissan still parked.

"The manager was quite puzzled, as she's turning in keys to an Infiniti, when she rented a Nissan in the first place", MacRae said.

By coincidence, the owner of Infinity has left its mark in the auto.

But little did she know she was actually seated behind the wheel of someone else's auto.

Though police say there was a "happy and amusing ending to this story", they say it serves as a flawless reminder not to leave key fobs in unattended vehicles. "Talk about a comedy of errors".
