Yosemite Park Closed While Ferguson Fire Reaching Nearly 40000 Acres

California Wildfires

Pam Temmermand, spokeswoman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, told ABC7 News said there were no reports of injuries but at least two out-buildings and one residence have burned.

In September, multiple fires burned through the park with lightning as the culprit.

More than 3,300 firefighters are working the fire, aided by 16 helicopters.

Yosemite National Park is ordering all visitors to evacuate large swaths of the park by noon on Wednesday amid worsening risks caused by the 38,000-acre Ferguson Fire, which has roared for almost two weeks and remains just 25 percent contained.

Clayton is about 30 miles east of San Francisco.

This resulted in around 12,000 people living in Idyllwild and the surrounding areas to be evacuated.

The Cranston Fire was one of several wildland blazes that erupted on Wednesday in Riverside County, east of the city of Hemet, that authorities said appeared to have been ignited by the same suspect.

At this point, no homes or structures have been destroyed by the blaze.

Over the last couple of weeks, firefighters have been battling a wildfire around the Yosemite National Park region in California. Smoke from the blaze is obscuring the valley's grand vistas of waterfalls and sheer granite faces.

Their planned three-day visit quickly turned into two as Yosemite Valley filled with smoke and ash. The next morning, they left for Los Angeles.

As the heat from the fire and the current warm weather conditions continues to rise, smoke is dramatically reducing visibility in the area and the air quality is deteriorating. "It's kind of amusing, we're going to LA to get some fresh air".

Wawona, a settlement of around 160 people a 25-mile (40-kilometer) drive to the south, will also close, with both areas expected to reopen on Sunday.

Officials had earlier said Yosemite wasn't under imminent danger from the fire; authorities decided on the closure to allow crews to perform protective measures such as burning away brush along roadways without having to deal with traffic in the park.

Elsewhere, a man was charged with starting the Cranston Fire in the San Bernardino National Forest that's grown to 4,700 acres.

In the state's far north, a 7-square-mile (18-square-kilometer) wildfire has forced the evacuation of French Gulch, a small Shasta County community that dates to the Gold Rush. Other parts of the park remain open.

The fire's faint glow was visible when he arrived at 3 a.m. and it kept getting brighter, he said.

Brandon N. McGlover, 32, of Temecula was booked on suspicion of five counts of arson, state fire officials said.

That bought them five more hours to collect the most precious items until late morning when it became too unsafe and they were told they had to leave.

"It's terrifying. You know you're frightened a little bit because you don't know if you're going to come back to your house and the town is going to be different", she told KRCR-TV. "We didn't get everything".
