YouTube aims to crack down on fake news, support journalism

YouTube will also be enlisting the help of some of the platform's popular creators to educate consumers - specifically kids - about fake news.

The grants "will enable our partners to build key capabilities, train staff on video best practices, enhance production facilities and develop formats optimized for online video", YouTube said in a statement late Monday.

"We believe quality journalism requires sustainable revenue streams and that we have a responsibility to support innovation in products and funding for news", the company's chief product officer and chief business officer, Neal Mohan and Robert Kyncl respectively, said in a statement.

To help with this contextualization, YouTube will also be teaming up with a variety of organizations that are dedicated to digital literacy education, particularly with MediaWise, which aims to help a million U.S. teens discern legitimate sources from fake news.

The company is also testing ways to counter conspiracy videos with generally trusted sources such as Wikipedia and Encyclopedia Britannica.

Google-owned YouTube on Tuesday announced a few improvements it intends to make to the news discovery and viewing experience.

"This is along with a reminder that breaking news can change rapidly, " he noted. Users can click the link to the full article to get more details on the story, and YouTube will remind users that the story may be "still developing" before it displays the video search results.

Rather than recommending a video first, the algorithm will point to a text-based story surfaced by Google News. These tests are being run in 25 markets across the USA and Google says that local news has gotten "strong engagement" so far.

Additionally, YouTube said it was creating a working group with news organizations and advisers from around the globe to "improve the news experience on YouTube and tackle emerging challenges". Early members of the working group include Vox Media, Jovem Pan, and India Today.

The platform is rolling out Top News and Breaking News pages, too, which highlight videos from global publishers about news events.

Not long after that, YouTube will turn its attention at directing users towards video reports - again from "quality news sources". These sections now appear in 17 countries, including the USA, U.K., France, Italy, Japan, India, Mexico, Brazil, South Africa, and Nigeria, and Google aims to double that number in the coming months.

YouTube's app and desktop client have begun implementing some new features in certain countries, with more expected to roll out over the coming months to a larger pool of regions.
