Aretha Franklin - Nobody like you

The Tonight Show on Thursday paid its respects to the late Aretha Franklin with a little help from Ariana Grande.

What is most remarkable about Franklin's rise to fame is that she, an African-American woman living in the 1960s United States, faced more than a mountain of conflict and disinterest on her rise to the top, but it barely slowed her down.

A professional singer and accomplished pianist by her late teens and a superstar by her mid-20s, Franklin had long ago settled any arguments over who was the greatest popular vocalist of her time. She had already released Respect, (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman and Think.

Franklin, 76, died Thursday after a battle with pancreatic cancer - and is now remembered for the legacy she left behind. "She was terrific - Aretha Franklin - on her passing", Trump said during a cabinet meeting Thursday, according to the New York Post.

The 18-time Grammy award victor inspired multiple singers during her six-decade career from pop diva Mariah Carey and the late Whitney Houston, to Alicia Keys, Beyoncé, Mary J Blige, and the late Amy Winehouse. "She was elegant, graceful, and utterly uncompromising in her artistry", they said. The image hails from a 2014 performance at the White House, where she sang for President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. Reports say her decomposed body was found in her home. Her family made Detroit their home just a few short years later and she grew up singing in her dad's house of worship, New Bethel Baptist Church on Linwood.

In 2010, she suffered serious health problems, but continued to perform until late past year, singing last in November 2017 for the Elton John AIDS Foundation in NY.
