August 11 Partial Solar Eclipse: Best Times, Places to See

Partial Solar Eclipse 2018 Timing Significance Myths And Precautions About Surya Grahan

As the sun will never be completely covered, spectators are advised to wear solar safety glasses at all times and photographic equipment will need filters. A total solar eclipse - like the one that took place on August 21, 2017 - occurs when the disk of the moon blocks 100% of the sun. Although, this myth gains traction around the time of a total solar eclipse, some people refuse to cook or eat even during partial eclipses.

A partial solar eclipse visible to major parts of the northern hemisphere will start in the early hours of August 11, Greenwich Mean Time, according to United States space agency Nasa.

The last solar eclipse of the year 2018 will occur today (Saturday). The peak of the eclipse will be around 11:46am CEST, ending around 1:30pm CEST.

As its a partial solar eclipse in 2018, it won't bother the country India.

You can see the viewing times for a few locations in Newfoundland and Quebec in the table below.

This partial solar eclipse will be directly visible to parts of the Northern Hemisphere, though this does not include India.

Those who reside in areas where the eclipse will be visible, must be warned that they should not look at the Sun directly. You'll have to wait until January 21, 2019 for the next eclipse.

What is a solar eclipse?

As mentioned previously, an eclipse is a phenomenon in which the Earth, Sun and Moon are aligned in a manner, which results in one body being blocked from getting sunlight.

Other parts of the world that will have views of the partial solar eclipse, albeit a much smaller version of it, include Harbin, China, Nuuk, Greenland and Seoul, South Korea.

So, unlike previous year, no place on Earth will see the glorious spectacle of a total solar eclipse. Because the moon's orbit is tilted, it does not always block the sun as it circles the Earth each month.

Making a pinhole in cardboard and holding it above a piece of paper on the ground can project the image of the solar eclipse without gazing at the Sun. Skywatchers should use binoculars, a telescope or optical camera viewfinder to watch the eclipse.
