Bangladesh: University of Asia Pacific students attacked, Campus vandalised

More than 100 students hurt during violent standoffs with police in Bangladesh, hospital says - but police deny anything happened

As protests erupt in Bangladesh over the death of two teenagers killed by a speeding bus, anger around the South Asian country's road safety has spilt into the streets of Australia.

Student protesters who are demanding safer roads and stricter traffic regulations in Bangladesh, clashed with the police here on Monday outside the East West University.

On Saturday the protests took a violent turn in Dhaka's Jigatala neighborhood with at least 115 students injured.

Tens of thousands of uniformed students have turned out to demand a crackdown on reckless bus drivers since Sunday, when a privately run bus hit the college students, provoking fury.

"We express our appreciation to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police and security officials for their quick and professional response following the incident", the Embassy said in a statement.

Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan questioned the protesters' fury, saying that in neighboring India, a recent crash killed more than 30 people, "but do they talk about it the way we do?" There were no injuries but two vehicles were damaged.

Images and photos of the attacks on students allegedly by the ruling party activists have flooded the social media, prompting renewed outrage.

The students of Jadavpur University raised slogans against Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and burnt her effigy.

Amid the violence, armed men attacked a convoy of cars carrying the United States ambassador on Saturday night.

"Regardless of political or religious values, we wanted to show solidarity with those students in Bangladesh", Mr Rahman said.

On several occasions, protesters and journalists covering the demonstrations were also attacked by unidentified men carrying sticks and metal rods, other media reported.

Ever since the protest erupted, the school students were seen on Dhaka's streets checking whether cars and buses had valid licenses and were in a roadworthy condition.

"There is no justification whatsoever for detaining anyone for exclusively peacefully expressing their views", Omar Waraich, Amnesty's deputy South Asia director, said in a statement. More than 100 people were injured as police fired rubber bullets at demonstrators marching toward an office of the ruling Awami League party.

The United Nations said it was anxious for the safety of the children and young people caught up in the protests. Traffic laws are poorly enforced and the students blame the private bus network for mishaps in a city choked by massive traffic jams.

The traffic chaos of the past week began easing on Monday, as huge demonstrations gave way to sporadic protests, though hundreds of students clashed with police in Dhaka's Bashundhara area where some private universities are located.

"Our demand is that the owners must appoint them and they will work a maximum of 10 hours". Student protesters, who has been tweeting on the developments, said that the situation remains tense.
