"Despite not having infected pools at the moment, we still have a moderate risk of getting bitten by a West Nile infected mosquito".

Amler added that people spending time outdoors should use repellents "from dawn to dusk". Be sure to use insect repellent and wear long sleeves and trousers at these times or consider staying indoors during these hours.

Eliminate stagnant water in birdbaths, ponds, flowerpots, wading pools, old tires and any other receptacles in which mosquitoes might breed.

People are also encouraged to ensure that doors and windows are sealed and screens are well maintained to ensure mosquitoes don't enter the home. Fill tree holes with sand and seal with mortar and remove tree stumps that may hold water. As of July 24, 39 cases of human WNV have been reported nationally.
