Betts' heroics not enough to lift the Red Sox over Jays

Mookie Betts hit a big home run to give him the first cycle of 2018. More

He walked three, gave up six hits, struck out five, and allowed two home runs, one to Randal Grichuk and the other to Teoscar Hernandez. He singled in the first, tripled in the second, doubled in the fourth, and homered in the ninth as part of a 4-for-4 night.

The rightfielder becomes the first Red Sox player to hit for the cycle in a loss since Carl Yastrzemski in 1965, according to ESPN Stats & Info.

In the second inning, Betts collected the most hard hit of any cycle by knocking a triple, also to left field. J.D. Martinez hit a solo home run, his 35 of the season.

Rick Porcello (14-5) lasted just four innings while giving up seven earned runs and six hits. He walked three batters and recorded five strikeouts. The two-out hit came after Boston loaded the bases on a leadoff single by Betts, an infield single by Andrew Benintendi and a walk by Xander Bogaerts.

Toronto's second run came across after Grichuk hit into a fielder's choice.

YANKEES 7, RANGERS 3 Giancarlo Stanton hit the hardest home run ever measured by Major League Baseball's Statcast system, Neil Walker hit two more home runs and NY beat Texas.

Smoak hit an RBI in the bottom of the inning to give Toronto a 5-4 advantage.

Betts had his first shot at the cycle in the sixth inning.

Rookie Ariel Jurado (2-2) got Stanton to hit into a double play in the first inning, then intentionally walked Didi Gregorius before Hicks homered to make it 2-0. Betts, Holt and Leon Culberson in 1943 are the only Red Sox to cycle from the leadoff spot.

Mitch Haniger, Denard Span, and Jean Segura - the top third of the Seattle batting order - combined to finish 10-for-13 with six runs and seven RBIs in a win at Houston.

DODGERS 8, ROCKIES 5 Chris Taylor and Brian Dozier homered off closer Wade Davis in the ninth inning and Los Angeles exploited Colorado's shaky bullpen. The trio totaled seven extra-base hits, with Span and Segura each recording their ninth homers.

The Red Sox moved on to Baltimore for tonight's opener of a four-game series. He opened the game with a single in the first inning. Eovaldi has not allowed an earned run in either of his first two starts for Boston.

James Paxton (10-5) improved to 4-0 in four starts against the Astros this season.
