China set to respond to new round of United States tariffs

Trump going ahead with tariffs on $16B in Chinese imports

Chinese and U.S. flags are set up for a signing ceremony during a visit by U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao at China's Ministry of Transport in Beijing, China April 27, 2018. Beijing is expected to hit $16 billion worth of U.S. goods with equal tariffs in response to Tuesday's move.

Washington has so far lined up an additional $200 billion in Chinese imports and last week Trump said he could raise tariffs on those products to 25 percent instead of the previously touted 10 percent.

That total could soon increase.

Several industry bodies in the U.S. representing agribusiness, retail and technology have said the Trump administration's tariffs are hurting them and will cause long-term damage to farmers, manufacturers and consumers. Those duties could be in place after a comment period ends on 6 September.

Trump also is moving forward with plans to tax a further $200 billion in Chinese products as soon as September and has threatened to eventually impose tariffs on all Chinese imports, which totaled $505 billion previous year, unless China capitulates.

At the same time, Beijing reported a $28.1bn trade surplus with the United States in July, just below the record $28.9bn seen in June. That was off slightly from June's 13.6% rate but still stronger than China's global export growth.

China is turning the heat up in the trade war by placing $16 billion in tariffs against a variety of American exports, including automobiles and motorcycles, according to NBC News.

The world's two biggest economies are locked in a trade dispute.

Among the products removed from the earlier list on $16 billion of imports were shipping containers, including those used by freight companies. That's 24% of all Washington exports according to the Washington Department of Agriculture. Also removed were splitting, slicing or paring machines. At the weekend, Mr Trump said he had the upper hand in the trade war, while Beijing responded through state media by saying it was ready to endure the economic fallout.

China fired back warning it would impose duties on $60 billion in U.S. goods.

Beijing already has stopped trying to match the US tariffs on a dollar-for-dollar basis, threatening to hit just an additional $60 billion in USA imports if the president follows through on his threat to target a further $200 billion in Chinese products.

The Trump administration has maintained that the tariffs are necessary to force China into changing economic behavior it says harms the US.

The Trump administration has accused China of unfair trade practices and President Donald Trump has long vowed to bring down the United States' trade deficit in goods with Beijing.
