Chipotle closes restaurant after illnesses reported

Another Chipotle Is Closed After Customers Complain of Getting Sick

Although there is now no indication that the outbreak has affected consumers in other states, Chipotle's stock fell almost 4 percent after news of the closing of the Powell location.

Health officials told ABC News that people who ate at the location complained of nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea after eating at the restaurant from July 26 to 30.

The Delaware General Health District and the fast casual Mexican grill continue to investigate.

The catalyst for the decline today is a story that was published last night by Business Insider of reports that 170 people reporting that they became ill after eating at a Chipotle location in Ohio. "We acted quickly and closed this single restaurant out of an abundance of caution yesterday", the company said in a statement.

"They are under a microscope, and any blip that arises is important for the business on a scale different than others", Chapman added, noting, for perspective, that there are an estimated 48 million cases of foodborne illnesses in the United States each year. It was trading down close to 2 percent in pre-market movement Tuesday and slipped as much as 9 percent during the day.

You'll recall that the chain experienced a series of food-poisoning outbreaks that torpedoed its year in 2015, closed a store in 2016 over norovirus concerns, and had another significant norovirus outbreak in 2017 at an L.A. store.

Chipotle voluntarily closed the OH restaurant Monday for deep cleaning and removal of all exposed foods and single-use equipment, the company said. The company expects to reopen the restaurant as soon as Tuesday. Chipotle believed an employee came to work sick and did not follow the protocols.

Chipotle's 2015 crisis was mostly an E. coli outbreak that hit public conscious when 42 locations in the Pacific Northwest briefly shut down.

That news also surfaced through iwaspoisoned.com when 89 reports and 133 customers reported falling sick. A norovirus outbreak in a Boston Chipotle sickened almost 150 customers.
