Davis Cup officially overhauled for 2019 with season-ending team event

RIP Davis Cup’ Tennis world reacts to tournament’s reform

In light of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) deciding to overhaul the format of its Davis Cup final, the odds of a Canadian Davis Cup squad playing in the season-ending event at home has become greatly diminished, nearly to the point of impossibility. For it to be passed, two thirds of the 147 member nations will have to vote in favour.

The new format replaces the one in which the Davis Cup is played over four weekends throughout the year.

The first edition of the newly-reformed tournament, dubbed the World Cup of Tennis, will be held in either Madrid or Lille in 2019, with the host due to be confirmed in the coming weeks. The tournament will be played in one neutral venue, instead of the current format in which it is played all over the world and the final in one of the two participating countries.

"The home and away fixture and the five-set battles are also part of what makes Davis Cup unique in tennis and sets it apart from the regular tour", he said.

The other six will be composed of the four semi finalists of the previous year and two teams invited by the organisation.

The new format involves 18 teams - that includes two wild cards - shuffled into six groups of three, where the victor and top two runners-up would proceed to a knockout stage started from the quarterfinals.

"The competition they suggest is not the Davis Cup".

Spain’s La Liga will start playing regular season matches in U.S.
La Liga , the top flight of Spanish club soccer, has announced that it will hold competitive league fixtures in the United States. Tebas said: "We're devoted to growing the passion for soccer around the world.

The Kosmos investment group are using Barcelona footballer Gerard Pique as their front man, and there were dozens of photographs circulating yesterday of Pique celebrating with various American tennis administrators.

"I am obviously totally against these changes to Davis Cup and pretty frustrated by what has occurred and the lack of information available", said Hewitt, a two-time victor of the Davis Cup and Australia's most successful singles player in the century-old event.

At the same time, the new format, and the many voices that backed it, ignore one element: matches will not take place for just one week of the year as purported.

Another Australian, John Millman tweeted: "Hey @daviscup Quick question".

The Lawn Tennis Association this week announced its intention to oppose the controversial Davis Cup reform.

The extra week of tennis in February though is a mild addition. Pique is among those who think the World Cup-style format is the boost the event needs.

"I am delighted that the nations have today voted to secure the long-term status of the Davis Cup", Haggerty said.
