Diego Godin rejects United as Mourinho issues grim update

Diego Godin

Although Jose Mourinho indicated in his press conference on Thursday morning that he wasn't hopeful any deals would be concluded in time for the 5pm deadline, that wasn't enough to stop United being linked with a new name.

Any hope that Manchester United would sign Diego Godin on transfer deadline day didn't last very long at all.

Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld, Jerome Boateng and Yerry Mina are all on United's radar as the deadline encroaches and Atleti's Godin has now emerged a target for the Premier League giants.

Manchester United have offered to trigger Diego Godin's £18m release clause and pay him £8.1m-per-season but the defender is set to stay at Atletico Madrid, according to ESPN.

The 32-year old is widely regarded as one of the best central defenders in the game and has been an integral member of Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid for years now.

Though the Uruguay global was flattered by United's interest he has opted to stay at Atletico.

Road crash causes explosion, fire near Bologna airport
Italian police posted a video of the tanker erupting in flames after plowing into the back of another truck on the highway. Traffic cameras caught the tanker truck carrying flammable materials as it hit the truck in front of it, and caught fire.

Godin appears settled in Spain and ESPN suggest the South American is more likely to sign a new contract at the Metropolitano Stadium than to push for a late move to Old Trafford during the closing stages of the window.

"I've been told in the past few minutes Godin's agent was actually the one who approached United this week, saying the player was keen to come to Old Trafford and a deal could be done".

When asked if he would make a signing today, Mourinho added: "The information I have is no".

It leaves United going back to the drawing board as they seek a defensive signing today.

The Portuguese has made three signings this summer - Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant - but has so far been frustrated in his search for a centre-back.
