Emotional Georgia Hall joins golfing elite with British Open win

Lydia Ko plays from a deep pot bunker during day two of women's British Open

Thailand's Pornanong Phatlum recorded her first bogey of the championship at the Women's British Open on Saturday and ended the third round as she started it with a one-stroke lead in Lancashire.

She followed Stupples and Catriona Matthew - in 2009 at Lytham - as the only British winners of the Women's British Open since it achieved major status in 2001.

Hall said: "It is too good to be true".

After England's Georgia Hall claimed her maiden major title at the Women's British Open, we look at her career highlights so far.

"I was loving it deep down, hitting the shots under pressure", said Hall, who barely showed any emotions all round. I was staying very calm and patient and it was very close up to the last two holes and I was just trying to hole the putts.

Hall, who finished third in the British Open last year, added: "Last year was a learning curve for me and I got so much experience in the British Open and the Solheim Cup and I learned that I can play and compete against the best in the world".

Phatlum's playing partner Georgia Hall of England is one shot off the lead and South Korea's Ryu So-yeon is one shot behind Hall.

When Phatlum drove into the thick rough and could only pitch out sideways at the eighth it cost her a dropped stroke and they went to the ninth hole with Hall one behind.

Named in honour of a famous Masters victory, Georgia Hall has her hands on one of the big trophies in women's golf at the age of 22.

She was born just two days after pro-golfer Nick Faldo overcame a huge deficit going into the last day of the Masters to win his third Masters at Augusta.

Hall also had huge success in the Australian Youth Olympics, winning gold in the individual event before picking up her second winner's medal in the team competition. "I try to plan every shot, every hole".

Her bogey on the last hole was her first of the round, and she dropped just three shots in the whole tournament - an astonishing achievement on such a hard links course.

Pornanong, a 16-time victor on tours in Thailand, Asia and Europe, admits she has been inspired by the Jutanugarn sisters - Moriya and world number one Ariya - who have boosted women's golf in her home country.

"I can't believe how many of you fans came out to support me, I am so grateful". The way Hall kept her composure and kept producing the shots of her life down the stretch, there might be more to come.

That same year, Hall represented Team GB at the 2013 Youth Olympic Festival where she won two golds and was part of the European team at the Junior Solheim Cup.

Ryu was in danger of slipping down after two early bogeys, but roared back with four straight birdies from the fifth hole, and picked up three more shots on the back nine.

Both players had a chance to birdie the 13th and, after Phatlum missed her attempt, Hall took full advantage of being on a similar line to make the flawless read and hole from 10ft.
