Federal Bureau of Investigation fires Peter Strzok in wake of anti-Trump text messages

Deputy Assistant FBI Director Peter Strzok speaks during a joint hearing of the House Judiciary and Oversight and Government Reform committees on Capitol Hill

The FBI has fired disgraced agent Peter Strzok, who has faced accusations of bias after it was discovered he sent numerous anti-Trump text messages in the lead up to the 2016 presidential election.

Strzok, a veteran FBI counterintelligence agent worked on separate investigations into Democrat Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server and Robert Mueller's investigation into U.S. President Donald Trump's campaign and Russian Federation.

Trump has repeatedly criticized Strzok on Twitter.

Goelman said that the Federal Bureau of Investigation had overruled the FBI's Office of Professional Responsibility, which he said had determined that a 60-day suspension and demotion from supervisory duties was "the appropriate punishment". The FBI didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.

A Department of Justice inspector general report found that Strzok's text messages about preventing Trump from winning the election did not affect the agency's ability to investigate Trump properly.

President Donald Trump has derided the pair as "FBI lovers", and he and his conservative allies have pointed to their conduct in an attempt to discredit the Mueller probe.

Page, who served as an FBI lawyer and close adviser to former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, resigned from the bureau in May.

"Just fired Agent Strzok, formerly of the FBI, was in charge of the Crooked Hillary Clinton sham investigation".

Trump and his supporters, however, argued the texts were evidence of a "deep state" conspiracy to undermine Trump's presidency. Goelman said that the deputy director's decision comes after the head of the office that normally handles disciplinary actions decided Strzok should instead face a demotion and 60-day suspension.

The decision to fire Special Agent Strzok is not only a departure from typical Bureau practice, but also contradicts Director Wray's testimony to Congress and his assurances that the FBI meant to follow its regular process in this and all personnel matters. Attorney General Jeff Sessions later removed Comey's deputy, McCabe, after the inspector general alleged he lied about a media disclosure related to Clinton.
