Firefighter killed battling California's Ranch Fire

California Wildfires: Thoughtful Authorities Help Keep Pet Fish Alive After Homeowners Evacuate

A press conference held Monday night confirmed the firefighter from Utah was injured while battling the Ranch Fire.

The Orange County Register reported that Holy Jim Volunteer Fire Chief Mike Milligan received an email from Clark saying, "This place will burn".

This is the eleventh wildfire-related fatality in California in the past month.

The Holy Fire, which has burned 22,714 acres in Southern California and is 52% contained as of August 13, was captured on a timelapse video as it began as a waft of smoke and later evolved into a giant dark cloud.

"Thanks CAL FIRE Engine 1489 & Corning Police Dept. for ensuring Grant was fed while his owners were evacuated due to the #CarrFire". It blew past the previous record set by last December's Thomas Fire near Santa Barbara, exceeding it now by about 14,000 acres.

Firefighters battling the Carr Fire further north - near Mount Shasta - did not have the same reprieve from scorching temperatures over the weekend, Jason Shanley, a Cal Fire spokesman told NPR.

About 3,900 firefighters, including a crew of 40 volunteers from New Zealand, had been battling the fire, contending with temperatures in the high 90s and winds gusting to 25 miles per hour. As it has grown to cover more than 202,000 acres, 1,077 homes, 22 commercial structures and 500 other buildings have burned.

Full containment is not expected on the until September 1, fire officials said. Hughes was the second firefighter to die in the blaze after Braden Varney was killed July 13.

Per a Cal Fire tweet: "After a father informed his daughter that her fish was likely dead, both were in for quite a shock when they returned home to a well-fed fish!" The River Fire has stay the same size, at 48,920 acres, for more than a day, and containment is now 93%.

Yosemite National Park will reopen Tuesday, 14 days after a wildfire choked the park with smoke at the peak of tourist season.
