Furyk gets core of Ryder Cup team, and obvious pick in Woods

US PGA victory exceeds Koepka's wildest dreams

Thomas Pieters hopes he has forced his way into the reckoning for a Ryder Cup wildcard after his strong performance in the US PGA Championship.

Bellerive wasn't supposed to favor the 2018 version of Woods' game. Behind him, Koepka holed his two birdie putts.

"We got some great airtime globally about what a wonderful place St. Louis is and that has to be a boost for the economic development, attracting companies here and people who want to live here", DeCola said.

Prevailing wisdom says Woods has done enough to make the team, although Furyk would not commit to that decision Monday.

Koepka carded a closing 66 in a breathless final round at Bellerive Country Club to finish two shots ahead of a rejuvenated Tiger Woods, joining Woods, Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan and Jack Nicklaus as the only players to win the US Open and US PGA in the same season. "They really get my attention".

As for the Ryder Cup, Furyk ended up with the same eight players who started the week atop the US standings.

The 48-year-old left hander missed the cut at the PGA Championship and has had only one top-10 finish since winning in Mexico at the beginning of March. He will announce the first three on September 3 after the Dell Technologies Championship, and will fill the last spot on the team on September 9 following the BMW Championship.

The 42-year-old golf legend finished the tournament in second place, shooting 14-under par across all four rounds and two strokes behind Koepka.

Adam did have an eight-footer across the hill at the 17th for a birdie, but he slid it under the hole and Koepka took a two-shot lead down the last, a 400m par four, which was duly dispatched with a drive - which barely ran five meters - and a wedge 15 feet behind the hole. And for all the craziness that went down at Bellerive, there was no real movement among the eight players who secured their spots.

"He's playing very well", Furyk said. Really what we wanted to talk about today was the top eight players. I realize Tiger is a story.

"More than anything else, I'm excited", Furyk said.

Woods was appointed a vice captain in late February, and he has said he would like to serve two roles. "I missed putts on 14 and 15 and Brooks didn't and my momentum was gone", Scott said.

During a wild first nine holes, Woods didn't hit a single fairway off the tee but got up and down from everywhere. We'll all sit down and give him our input, who can contribute. The numbers are nice, good to look at, but not always the most important. - Tiger Woods reflects on his remarkable return after spinal fusion surgery. With one decent week in the playoffs, he most likely would be assured of being in all four of the events, ending with the Tour Championship the week before boarding a plane to Paris.

What remains is for Furyk to determine his four captain's picks. The other was in 2010, when he was coming off the scandal in his personal life that kept him out of golf until the 2010 Masters, and he finished the qualifying period at No. 12.

Maybe financially it makes more money in the United States; but well sold and marketed and with a pick of the world's best courses, generations from now the PGA Championship could easily be the equal of the other three major championships.

Phil Mickelson failed to qualify for the Ryder Cup for the first time since 1993, his first full season on the PGA Tour.
