Hurricane Hector Hawaii latest: Will Hurricane Hector trigger NEW ERUPTION of Kilauea?

Hurricane Hector could collide with erupting Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii

Hurricane Hector roared through the Central Pacific on Sunday and is expected to pass near the Big Island of Hawaii, where a volcano continues to send lava into the sea.

The National Weather Service says Hurricane Hector is expected to pass south of the Big Island Tuesday night and Wednesday as it moves westward.

The Hawaiian Islands were placed on alert as Hector inched toward the central Pacific with maximum sustained winds of 125 miles per hour.

The NHC issued a tropical storm warning Wednesday for Hawaii County, and the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency advised residents to prepare an emergency kit that includes at least a 14-day supply of food, water and other necessities.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 105 miles. "Now is a good time for everyone in the Hawaiian Islands to ensure that they have their hurricane plan in place", it said. While all of the dynamical models are in agreement on the overall scenario there is a fairly typical amount of cross-track spread with the ECMWF along the southern edge of the guidance envelope and the HMON and GFS along the northern side.

As of 11 p.m. ET Saturday, Hector was located 1,395 miles south of Hilo, Hawaii. "Hector could also track farther north near Hawaii if its forward speed slows down".

Some weather predictions show the storm on a course to collide with the Kilauea Volcano, which has been spewing lava into communities on the Big Island for three months.

"The track of the hurricane still has the center passing well south of the main Hawaiian island at this time", Brink said Sunday morning.

"Interests in the Hawaiian Islands should monitor the progress of Hector", the NHC said.
