India vs England: Woakes Makes Instant Impact as Stokes Substitute

Sam Curran Paul Farbrace and Ollie Pope of England look on from the balcony before the 2nd Specsavers Test Match between England and India at Lord's

After Chris Woakes removed Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya in successive overs, he finished the day with a Test record at Lord's reading 16 wickets at the absurdly low average of 9.93. Now he has answered any questions about his batting with a Test century at Lord's.

Chris Woakes hit his maiden Test century as England hammered home their advantage over India in the second Test at Lord's.

Woakes had already impressed with the ball, dismissing India captain Virat Kohli in taking 2-19 on Friday, but was arguably even more impressive with the bat from number seven.

Woakes, back after thigh and knee injuries that have so far blighted his summer, started the carnage after he had Kohli caught on 23 by Jos Buttler at second slip just one ball after the same man had dropped him.

While on the first day, the team was treated to dishes like chicken lasagna, paneer tikka curry and apple pie with custard, among many others, the second day saw them being served with banana and date sticky toffee pudding, chicken carbonara, prawns in marie rose sauce and much more.

Jonny Bairstow deserved a century but was out for 93 as England took the gsme away from the tourists.

Before this series, KL Rahul's previous Test innings against England brought him 199 at Chennai in December 2016.

England had stumbled to 89-4 in reply to India's first- innings 107, but Bairstow played confidently and was unbeaten on 62 at the interval while the returning Woakes (55 not out) notched up his fifth Test fifty as the hosts reached 230-5.

Towards the end, tailender Mohammed Shami struck a few lusty blows to guide India to the three-figure mark before fellow quick Ishant Sharma (0) was trapped by Anderson. The 20-year-old played only 15 First-Class matches before this clash leaving many to wonder whether the young gun had what it takes to take on the world's best side.

By contrast, England´s innings commenced under sunny blue skies that promised to make life easier for the batsmen.

Pope made a promising 28 before he was lbw to Pandya. The Indian batsmen have themselves to blame as much as the top-class bowling from the English fast-bowlers led by James Anderson.
