Iran ambassador: Trump's sanctions violate United Nations security council resolution

TENSE IN TEHRAN: The President Slams Iran With 'MOST BITING SANCTIONS EVER IMPOSED'

The EU has revived legislation meant to insulate European companies doing business with Iran from United States sanctions, instructing them not to comply with Washington's demands, and providing a mechanism to sue the USA in European courts.

In this photo released by an official website of the office of the Iranian Presidency, President Hassan Rouhani, right, greets North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho at the start of their meeting, at the presidency office, in Tehran, Iran, Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2018.

Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif met with his North Korean counterpart Ri Yong Ho on Tuesday (Aug 7), on the same day the United States reimposed nuclear-related sanctions on the Islamic republic. The Iranian president added that "the greatest capital that any country has is trust and credibility".

US officials have said in recent weeks that they aim to pressure countries to stop buying oil from Iran in a bid to force Tehran to halt its nuclear and missile programs and involvement in regional conflicts in Syria and Iraq.

So it was working, and by stepping away from a pact that took years to negotiate and imposed important concessions on Iran, the Trump administration was making it less likely that Tehran wouid come to the negotiating table again soon, they say.

Following the United States' sanctions going into effect against the Islamic Republic on Tuesday, Iraq's pro-Iranian militias threatened to break Iran's blockade at all cost. Donald Trump claimed they were "the most biting ever imposed" and warned that in November, sanctions would "ratchet up to yet another level" with an embargo on Iranian oil and blanket sanctions on Iranian banks.

"If the Americans want to keep this simplistic and impossible idea in their minds they should also know its consequences, " Zarif said".

President Hassan Rouhani made his first public comments on the protests Monday, acknowledging some concerns while downplaying the scale of demonstrations, the Wall Street Journal reported. Zarif said that Oman and Switzerland have acted as mediators in talks with America in the past but that there are now no direct or indirect talks being held with the United States.

Following Trump's announced USA departure from the deal in May, the White House has, through 17 rounds, sanctioned 38 Iran-related targets.

Already facing broad economic fallout as their currency implodes, Iranians are wondering how the next phase of the crisis in United States relations will play out - and what, exactly, America's long-term strategy is toward their country.

Russia, which remains a signatory of the 2015 deal along with the European Union and others, also slammed the US sanctions on Iran.
