Jim Furyk won't commit to Tiger Woods as Ryder Cup at-large pick

Jim Furyk

Furyk said Wednesday he was open to the idea of Woods serving double duty as a player and vice captain but wanted to see what worked best for the team if that possibility arose. For me the numbers are nice, good to look at, but not always the most important.

"To do it in this fashion, playing against Tiger and Scotty down to the wire, it's really incredible". Sixth place at the Open Championship, a second place at the PGA. The word he used is "trending". "We get an opportunity to see some more guys play well". He had to settle for a 69 and was eight shots behind, with 27 players in front of him.

If Woods and Mickelson have already been penciled in as picks, which many believe they have, that essentially leaves a half dozen players vying for the final two spots.

Getting the best of Koepka sets up as a daunting challenge for Woods, though the 42-year-old, 14-time major victor could easily argue he's been through worse. He also straddled the fence when asked whether he will be looking for more veteran presences like Woods, Mickelson and Matt Kuchar, who is now 13th in the standings, or more youth to cultivate with Thomas being the only Ryder Cup rookie now on the squad.

"He's playing very well", Furyk said. I realise Tiger is a story.

Dustin Johnson - the No. 1 player in the world - Masters champ Patrick Reed, Justin Thomas, Bubba Watson, Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler and 2018 Players Championship victor Webb Simpson were the other seven automatic qualifiers named to Furyk's squad.

Kuchar did earn a respectable tie for ninth at The Open, but his missed cut at the PGA Championship was the fourth time in his last six starts that he has failed to play the weekend.

Furyk is also expected to give Phil Mickelson a wild card after the five-time major victor failed to qualify automatically for the first time in his career, with the likes of Bryson DeChambeau, Tony Finau, Xander Schauffele, Matt Kuchar and Zach Johnson in the frame for the remaining two.

Along with moving to No. 11 in the Ryder Cup standings, Woods now is at No. 20 in the FedEx Cup.

Furyk will name his first three wild cards in three weeks' time and then his final pick a week later. "That said, having a mix of veteran and young players is a good thing". It is a remarkable run for a player who has lived most of his golfing life somewhat below the radar. But for Woods, arguably the greatest golfer of all time, the bar for "back" isn't simply to compete and pick up Top 10 finishes but to make shots and do things in the big moments that few, if any, can.

"It's a packed leaderboard and there are going to be about 10 of us looking for that round of the year", Scott said.

Kisner, who contended for much of the PGA, is the kind of fearless bulldog Furyk should want on his team.

Team USA captain Jim Furyk now knows his eight automatic qualifiers for the Ryder Cup next month, but who will he be considering for his wildcard choices?

Brooks Koepka has defended his US Open. Watson and Simpson were successful together at Medinah in 2012, although neither has won a Ryder Cup singles match. The 42-year-old golf legend finished the tournament in second place, shooting 14-under par across all four rounds and two strokes behind Koepka.

"He's priceless. He's been a really big help to our captains in both '16 and '17 from a strategy perspective", Furyk said. Furyk said Monday that if Woods is picked, he will add another vice captain, although he expects plenty of input from Woods regardless.
