Johnson to face panel over burka comments

Boris Johnson Conservative burka

Disciplinary action could lead to Mr Johnson being suspended or even expelled if he was found to be in breach of the Tory code of conduct.

I'm not sure that kind of language is ok at this time, let's not have any more of it.' He later tweeted a clip of the segment and wrote: 'It was like being in a room with him for a moment'.

The former Foreign Secretary's supporters countered that his enemies were plotting against him in an attempt to scupper his hopes of succeeding Theresa May.

Sayeeda Warsi, a Conservative member of the House of Lords, said Johnson was using Muslim women as a "convenient political football to try and increase his poll ratings".

The Uxbridge and South Ruislip MP has stirred the Conservative party into a frenzy with the comments, as many urged Mr Johnson to apologise and they said the comments riled up anti-Muslim sentiment.

Andrew Bridgen, the Tory MP for North West Leicestershire, said he felt "uncomfortable" speaking to a woman in a burka as you can't see their reaction and it goes against "millions of years of human evolution".

The Conservative Party's chairman, Brandon Lewis, has called on Mr Johnson to apologise for the comments.

And Tory peer Lord Sheikh, president of the Conservative Muslim Forum, has written to party bosses demanding he is kicked out of the party. By a narrow margin of 48 per cent to 45 per cent they thought he did not need to say sorry for his comments.

Johnson's words have once again validated the view of those that "other" Muslims.

It is not to be confused with the hijab, which leaves the face uncovered, or the niqab, which leaves the eyes exposed.

Johnson, who quit the government last month in a dispute over Brexit, made the remarks in a Daily Telegraph article published Monday.

Mr Johnson branded the burka "oppressive" and said it is "weird and bullying to expect people to cover their faces".

"I would go further and say that is it absolutely ridiculous that people should choose to go around looking like letter boxes".

"If a female student turned up at school or at a university lecture looking like a bank robber then ditto".
