Make E-Cigarettes Available On The NHS, MPs Urge Government

The government is being used to make e-cigarettes available through the NHS to help smokers kick the habit

A pair from Scotland and Wales found that vaping may be a gateway to normal cigarette use while a study of inmates on the Isle of Man concluded e-cigarettes had helped them quit smoking and become more relaxed.

A report by the committee of MPs said the government should support making e-cigarettes more widely used and even consider allowing e-cigarettes on public transport.

The report comes as part of an inquiry into e-cigarettes by the Science and Technology Committee, which is examining the impact of electronic cigarettes on human health.

A report by the Science and Technology Committee said that rules around e-cigarettes should be relaxed to help accelerate already-declining smoking rates. Meanwhile, 7.4 million people (15.1 percent of people aged 18 years and above) are classified as current smokers, according 2017 data from the Office for National Statistics.

She added: "The committee's recommendations set out a useful road map for the Government to continue its progressive regulatory approach to the category which will help more smokers, who would otherwise not quit, make the switch from traditional tobacco products".

United Kingdom politicians agreed e-cigarettes are not as harmful as smoking.

'There is no public health rationale for doing so. They also pointed to links between some experts, the tobacco industry and firms that manufacture e-cigarettes.

The report follows a statement by Public Health England earlier this year in which health officials called for more tolerance for e-cigarette users and for hospitals to provide patients with vaping lounges.

Of those, nearly half a million are using them as an aid to stop smoking with tens of thousands successfully quitting smoking each year as a result.

Former health minister Norman Lamb - the committee chairman - wants the Government to consider allowing more freedom to advertise e-cigarettes. A study by the New York University School of Medicine found smoke from e-cigarettes damages DNA and can increased the risk of cancer and heart disease in mice.

'If used correctly, e-cigarettes could be a key weapon in the NHS stop-smoking arsenal'.

And they said bans on vaping in public places - such as in hospitals, restaurants or on buses - should be reconsidered.

One professor said loosening regulation could be hard despite the committee finding and acknowledges there is still plenty of resistance to e-cigarettes in the public.

And in Wales, concern have been raised abut young people using e-cigarettes on a regular basis.

"E-cigarettes are more likely to be a gateway out of smoking for adults than a gateway into smoking for children", Hazel said.

Critics argue that e-cigarettes could act as a "gateway" to smoking, especially for young people - but this report claims non-smokers are very unlikely to take up vaping.

"There is no doubt that e-cigarettes get a bad press and it is about time they were publicly discussed and their benefits highlighted".

Duncan Selbie, chief executive of PHE, said: "E-cigarettes are not without harm but are way safer than the harms of tobacco".

The shop also has a strict "Challenge 25" policy so people have to produce ID if they look younger than 25.
