Manchester United's Jose Mourinho not confident of new signings before deadline

Both clubs finished below United last season in the Premier League yet Mourinho claims they are projected as "serial winners" despite failing to land a trophy since 2012 and 2008 respectively.

With just hours left before the summer transfer window closes, disgruntled Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has revealed that he's not confident of signing any more players.

Yet, United could end up facing one of Mourinho's top targets in Harry Maguire at Old Trafford, with Leicester reportedly holding out for a world-record fee for a defender to land one of England's key players during a run to the World Cup semifinals.

Speaking at a news conference to preview Friday's Premier League opener against Leicester, Mourinho told reporters he does not expect any deadline-day activity at Old Trafford, despite also being linked to centre-backs Toby Alderweireld, Yerry Mina and Jerome Boateng.

"I'm not confident, I'm not confident and the market closes today so is time at least for me to stop thinking about the market because the market will be closed". We go with everything we have in that first match. It is hard for me to understand we finish second. "I won eight championships and three Premier Leagues but I keep feeling that second last season was one of my biggest achievements in the game".

Writing in his column for the BBC, Shearer said: "Their team is definitely already good enough to challenge champions Manchester City for the title, but can Jose get the best out them, and can they play in a style that can keep their fans happy?"

Romelu Lukaku, Marcus Rashford and Phil Jones all came back early from their own extended breaks but Mourinho sounded downbeat again when he was asked about the new season.

But United are even more shorthanded by the quick turnaround between the World Cup and the start of the new season.

"I'm a United fan, and I want to see them win the title, but I fear it's going to be very hard for that to happen this season".
