New Jersey reports first human case of West Nile virus this year

The virus is spread by mosquito bites

Mosquitoes collected in DeKalb, Sycamore and Sandwich tested positive for West Nile Virus, according to the DeKalb County Health Department.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) has monitored the spread of West Nile virus since 2001 among wild birds, horses, mosquitoes, and people. Prior to this year, CT has seen 134 cases with three fatalities, the DPH said. This species is also known to bite during the daytime just as much as they can at both dawn and dusk. People who develop any of these symptoms should see their healthcare provider immediately.

Landscape to prevent water from pooling in low-lying areas. Last year, three CT residents were diagnosed with WNV infection.

Public health workers also advise removing standing water from your property.

Change water in bird baths on a weekly basis. Report swimming pools that are not being properly maintained by contacting the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito & Vector Control District at 1-800-429-1022 or www.fightthebite.net/pool-program.

DRESS APPROPRIATELY-Wear long-sleeved shirts, long trousers, and socks. Clothing material should be tightly woven.

When using DEET, use the lowest concentration effective for the time spent outdoors (for example, 6 percent lasts approximately two hours and 20 percent for four hours) and wash treated skin when returning indoors. DEET can be used safely on infants and children 2 months of age and older, according to the department.

Make sure window and door screens are in good fix to prevent mosquito entry.

That includes the two in Waterloo region, one in the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health coverage area and one in Perth county. Limit the number of places around your home for mosquitoes to breed by either draining or getting rid of items that hold water.

"The majority of infected individuals have mild or no symptoms", it continues.
