People Shot, 6 Fatally in Chicago Over Weekend

11 dead nearly 70 wounded in weekend violence in Chicago

Forty-four people were shot across the Midwestern US city of Chicago Sunday, US media reported, with five killed in a wave of violence police branded "totally unacceptable".

CBS Chicago and WLS-TV reported that 10 people were killed and 53 were shot in Chicago over the weekend.

According to the Chicago Tribune, at least 41 people were shot from 11 a.m. Saturday through Sunday morning.

City spokesman Dan Regan told the Chicago Tribune that the violence was so bad at one point that the emergency department at Mount Sinai Hospital stopped accepting new victims.

"We know that some of these incidents were targeted and are related to gang conflicts in those areas", he added.

The violence peaked early Sunday, including one shooting on the city's South Side that injured eight people.

Waller said that despite the weekend's violence, shootings in the city are down 30 per cent from 2017, and murders are down 25 per cent.

The shooting happened about 6:50 a.m.in the first block of North Leclaire, police said.

As of 3:15 p.m., at least two other people had been killed and 25 more had been left wounded in Sunday shootings. In the Fuller Park neighborhood, three people were shot by someone in a ski mask and a black hoodie.

"An offender or some type of rival gang sees a large group of people. and they shoot into a crowd, no matter who they hit", he said. A 37-year-old man was shot in the right calf and hospitalized in stable condition, a 21-year-old man was shot in the upper thigh and hospitalized in stable condition and another male victim was shot and is hospitalized.

"It is important to know that we at the FOP have tried to work with the attorney general of the state of IL, and they've refused to listen to us", Graham said during a press conference at the police union's headquarters.

The man suffered gunshot wounds to his body and neck and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

"Over the past 24 hours, Stroger's trauma unit received an unusually high volume of patients".

He also said more than 5,500 illegal guns had been confiscated from the city's streets.
