Poland slams Russian 'occupation' of Georgian regions since 2008

Georgia’s NATO entry could lead to terrible conflict Russian PM warns

On August 8, 2008, the Russian army swept into Georgia - bombing targets and occupying large swathes of territory - after Tbilisi launched a large-scale military operation against South Ossetian separatist forces who had been shelling Georgian villages in the region.

The Georgian MFA says that after 10 years, Russian Federation continues its aggression against Georgia and conducts illegal drills on the territories of Georgia's occupied regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Irakli Koplatadze, termed the Russia's 2008 military intervention into Georgia as a "direct attack on Europe's security and global order".

The European Union reiterates its firm support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognised borders. "Georgia is actively having strategic talks with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation over the Black Sea's security and it is ready to further contribute to the NATO's efforts in the region", he added.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has issued a stern warning to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation on the 10th anniversary of the Russia-Georgia war that Tbilisi's joining the alliance could lead to a "horrible" new conflict, RFE/RL reports.

The statement also mentioned Georgian citizens Davit Basharuli, Giga Otkhozoria and Archil Tatunashvili, who were killed by the occupation forces, saying Georgia has repeatedly proved unilateral fulfillment of the non-use of force, expecting similar steps from Russian Federation.

On August 5, a video by Linas Linkevičius went viral in Georgia's social media.

"This visit will not only be symbolic, but we will also talk with our colleagues, president and prime minister, Georgia's foreign minister, how we can specifically support them in cooperation with the European Union and NATO", Rinkevics added. "It [Russia] is a direct aggressor".

Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz during a press conference in the Georgian capital Tbilisi on Tuesday.

By the end of the conflict on August 12, several hundred people had died and Moscow subsequently recognized South Ossetia and Georgia's other breakaway region, Abkhazia, as independent states and has stationed military forces there ever since.
