Pres. Trump Calls For Peace, Condemns Racism, One Year After Charlottesville Riots

Businesses say they'll refuse service to Unite the Right attendees in DC

Jason Kessler, who abandoned his bid to stage a similar anniversary event in Charlottesville, said in his permit application that he expects 100 to 400 people to participate in his event Sunday afternoon in Lafayette Park, in front of the White House.

The counter-protests in Washington have renewed the debate over whether small demonstrations of racist extremists should be ignored, or greeted with forceful public opposition.

Trump's words contrast sharply with his first public comments on the events last summer, which left 32-year-old anti-racist counterprotester Heather Heyer dead after a suspected white nationalist plowed his vehicle into a crowd on August 12, 2017. And critics said their delayed response contributed to clashes between white supremacists and neo-Nazis and counterprotesters. He said then that there were "good people on both sides", and later "blame on both sides".

Those statements drew widespread condemnation from Jewish leaders, Democrats and Republicans. When they are in the same area at the same time, it leads to violent confrontations.

The rally on Sunday, called Unite the Right II, is scheduled to take over Lafayette Square for two hours in the evening.

Both groups have been given permission to demonstrate in separate sections of Lafayette Square, a shady park that looks onto the back of the United States president's residence.

"Our goal is to prevent that from occurring".

Cummings told Karl on Sunday, "It's one thing to say things". Guns will be forbidden near the rally site, regardless of whether an individual has a permit to carry the firearm.

Young is part of a group organising the Still Here, Still Present rally, which is set to begin at 12pm local time (16:00 GMT) in Washington, DC's Freedom Plaza.

Speaking by telephone on Friday, Kessler said he's feeling a lot better about the safety precautions for the Washington rally. The students said it did not make them feel safe. "They weren't there to protect us", she recalled.

Organized by Unite the Right - the same network that called last year's protest in Charlottesville, Virginia - Sunday's rally will once again see the extremists stand face-to-face with anti-fascists, who are staging a counter protest.

They marched on the Downtown Mall, moved toward Market Street Park, but turned away.

Police in Charlottesville previous year stood back as white supremacists and neo-Nazis engaged in brutal clashes and street brawls with counterprotesters, including members of anti-fascist groups.

Lance also expressed optimism that law enforcement will be fully prepared.

The rest of the day had been much quieter, with some residents and businesses expressing that they felt calmer with the police presence in town.

The president's approval rating remains high among Republican voters, leaving most members of his party in Congress loathe to publicly criticize him.

Last year, 22-year-old Clara Carlson faced down the group of white supremacists who marched through campus, surrounding her and a group of friends. Polls and recent primary races show Democrats outperforming expectations heading into the final months of the campaign.
