Ready-Made Salads, Wraps Recalled For Possible Parasite Contamination

A Trader Joe’s product affected by the recall

Trader Joe's, the Monrovia, Calif. -based grocery chain, posted the health warning on its website for three products - tarragon chicken salad wrap, Caesar salad with chicken, and Chinese inspired salad with chicken - which were sold only in IL and 10 other Midwestern states.

Federal officials are warning consumers to be on guard for signs of intestinal distress if they've eaten any of more than two dozen types of salads and wraps sold by several major retailers around the U.S. Some chopped romaine used by Caito Foods and supplied by Fresh Express has been recalled over feared Cyclospora contamination, according to the Food Safety and Inspection Service statement. The incubation period ranges from 2 to 14 days.

Symptoms of Cyclospora infection include watery diarrhea, loss of appetite and weight, cramping, bloating or increased gas, nausea, fatigue, and low-grade fever.

They were produced between July 15 and 18, with either "Best By", "Enjoy by", "Best if Sold By" or "Sell By" dates ranging from July 18 through July 23.

Del Monte Fresh Produce in June issued a voluntary recall of vegetable trays sold in six Midwest states, including IL, due to potential cyclospora contamination.

If you are anxious you have consumed a recalled item, contact a medical professional. A list of the affected products can be seen here and here.

Even though the products are past their "best by" dates, the USDA is concerned that they may still be in people's refrigerators.

The summer has been rife with recalls and reported cyclospora infections, especially in IL. The infection can be treated with antibiotics. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

The outer limit of the incubation period for this batch of food is August 6, the USDA said, and it could be up to six weeks before officials begin to receive reports of illness.
