The 41-year-old World Cup victor was diagnosed after falling ill on Friday and was rushed to the Can Misses Hospital on the Spanish island of Ibiza.

Retired Brazil striker Ronaldo has thanked football fans for their support and revealed he will leave the Ibiza hospital on Monday.

A few hours later, according to 'Diario de Ibiza', Ronaldo asked to be released from the public hospital so he could be admitted to the private clinic, Nuestra Señora del Rosario.

The newspaper's sources said the ex-footballer was still in intensive care, but was making good progress. The hospital could not immediately be reached by Reuters for comment.

During his playing career, Ronaldo was famous for his blistering pace and phenomenal goal-scoring record.

Ronaldo, whose full name is Ronaldo Luiz Nazario de Lima, rose to fame for his exploits as a striker for many of Europe's top clubs, as well as the Brazilian national team.

Pneumonia is swelling of the tissue in one or both lungs and is usually caused by a bacterial infection.

Ronaldo was also a star for his country Brazilian bagging an incredible 62 goals in just 98 games.

Since retirement, however, he has battled thyroid problems and gained significant weight.

It can be life-threatening, especially among the elderly and those with underlying health conditions.
