Russia Tasks Hollywood Actor Seagal With Improving U.S. Ties

The unpaid position was likened to that of a UN Goodwill Ambassador.

"In his new capacity Seagal is expected to promote the development and implementation of various projects of bilateral cooperation in the fields of culture, art, science, education, sports, public and youth exchanges, participate in relevant events on Russian territory and overseas and maintain contacts with US partners", it said in a statement.

Seagal, 66, starred in Hollywood action movies such as Above The Law (1988), Hard To Kill (1990), and Under Siege (1992).

After being announced as Russia's special representative on humanitarian relations with the United States, the exact nature of Hollywood star and martial artist Steven Seagal's mission has been revealed.

Last Saturday, Russian officials tapped him for another role: special representative to improve relations between the U.S. and Russia.

While some might doubt his diplomatic credentials, Seagal has not been shy about sharing his views on the ties between the two countries.

Born in the USA, the martial arts star gained global fame for roles in the 1980s and '90s like Under Siege.

USA senators, on Moscow trip, invite Russian lawmakers to Washington
The "main aim of the trip" was to "create a dialogue" and "improve relations" between Moscow and Washington , Paul added. Trump later walked back the remark and said he trusted the US intelligence community's assessment Moscow did interfere.

In November 2016, the Kremlin announced that Seagal had received Russian citizenship.

"I've always tried to do everything possible to help Russian-American relations to improve".

President Vladimir Putin presented a Russian passport to United States actor Steven Seagal in 2016, saying he hoped it would serve as a symbol of how fractious ties between Moscow and Washington were starting to improve. "I have worked tirelessly in this direction for many years unofficially and I am now very grateful for the opportunity to do the same thing officially". Seagal's familiy is originally from Russia, but other celebrities have been granted Russian citizenship for various reasons.

Seagal, like Putin, is an accomplished martial artist.

He said he had called Putin "one of the world's great leaders"; he described the Russian president as a personal friend and expressed a desire to improve relations between the U.S. and Russia.

"Every country is involved in espionage", Seagal said, USA Today writes.
